I did not know that "Amen" was a gendered term?  If it is, then what about all the other myriad of genders?

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., altered the traditional ending of "amen" by saying "Amen and awoman" as he delivered the opening prayer for the 117th Congress on Sunday -- raising eyebrows.

The video was posted online and he was criticized by other lawmakers who said he was wrong to attempt to assign gender to the word "amen."

Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, R-Pa., took to Twitter to note that the word amen is "Latin for ‘so be it.’"

Prayer doesn't belong in government anyway, so I have a hard time getting worked up over this.

Not sure I take your meaning. Prayer doesn't belong in government. Dude wants to say a prayer and make up his own words, he should be doing it in a church or temple or mosque. I think that should be the take-away, not that he made up a word.

What is wrong with prayer in government.  People are allowed to believe what they want including Reps, Senators, Justices, etc.  I don't believe there is a requirement for elected or appointed officials to give up their beliefs when they come to DC.  Now if Congress is trying to pass a law organizing a State religion or something like that, you might have a point.  As to the OP, this is related to the identity politics primarily used by the Dems.  When they start assigning gender to words that don't have gender it seems to me that things are getting out of control.  I think we need to create a new word to go along with "history", maybe "herstory"?

Nobody, including me, has ever said someone has to give up their beliefs to be in government. I simply said that a government body is no place for practicing religion.

Identity politics? No. I really don't care about it. I said as much in my first post.

 

Practicing religion in government is a far worse offense to me.

I cannot take his outrage seriously. Amen is not Latin. Good grief, what are they teaching in Sunday School these days?! He also may never have been in a church in the past... well many years, as ''amen and awomen is a joke I've heard many a pastor make before". They think it's being kewl or hip or someting... most people just groan and let them get on with it. Fox should be ashamed for even writing an article about it - some people don't deserve the nonsense attention.

Interesting you say that, how many folks are persecuted for making an inane statement?  I think we can tank social media for that.

It really is a joke and it's been around for as long as I can remember. So if he wants to take to twitter to whine, so be it - it's nonsense he should receive attention for it though. He's completely wrong, and I would assume he's being efficiently internet-dragged for his error by now.

Really no big deal to me, but the word is from Hebrew and has nothing to do with Gender. This would be 999 on my list of 1000 things to Triger about.
