Yes, the ORIGINAL came from South America--and it's also true that the original wheat came from the Indus Valley (as in during Harappan times).

I'm sure varieties (of potatoes) were developed by pollination experiments outside (such as in Ireland and Russia--which are the heaviest per-capita consumers, as well as possibly India the largest total producer/consumer), just as varieties of wheat have been developed OUTSIDE the subcontinent since 1500 BC (when the Harappan civilisation collapsed).

What happened to India's efforts to patent basmati rice?

what???? i thought the thais invited that..

Impossible, as Thailand DOES NOT even HAVE the right terrain/climate combination for growing it.

Basmati was first created in the Uttarkhand-Himachal Pradesh area.

brother sriniv, i bought a bag of it...( sanita uses this type in plov) and it says on it..Product of thailand...those chops..must buy it from india and then rebag it for export..

I don't see why it can't be grown in Thailand. Northern Thailand is probably similar to the HP area of India.

I believe Thailand grows jasmine rice....

which is NOT the same as Basmati (FYI, this can be confirmed by a nutritional analysis: jasmine has only the same nutrient distribution as "ordinary" rice, while Basmati is higher in protein--in fact, highest of all rice varieties).

Basmati, a high-priced-scented rice crop, has been introduced into Thailand since 1973. The current area of concentration of Basmati is in the North. Basmati rice for export has been currently promoted under the Public-Private Coordination for Agriculture and Agro-industrial Development Programme. Major exporting markets for Thai Basmati rice are the Arabian countries. Thai Basmati exports account for 2% of the world market share.
