Probably, and that definitely isn't meant as an endorsement of Newsom. Recalls are expensive and suck away precious resources at a time when we need to be laser-focused on four things in my opinion,: (1) the state's COVID response; (2) fire management; (3) water management; and (4) the housing crisis. Spending millions on a recall is a bad idea right now. We have a general election next year. 

 

Were you here in 2003? That's the year I left for college, and I registered to vote where I moved to almost immediately so I didn't vote in the Davis recall. But I was around the summer when everything was brewing. It was a LOT of money, and it was a huge sideshow full of freaks. Schwarzenegger turned out to be a far better governor than I expected, even though I never had the chance to vote for him. However, we're in a very different situation right now. Even with the stupid French Laundry incident, Newsom is still popular -- last polls (late October I think) had him with popularity about 60%. Davis was REALLY unpopular at the time of the recall, and the state was less solidly Democratic then than now. 

 

The outcome will be that Newsom will win a recall, because people like me say: we do not need to change horses right now. What a waste of time and money and attention! Newsom isn't perfect and I think he could do a better job on a whole host of things. But he will have a chance to be assessed in the primaries, and I would like to see some good challengers to him. We have jungle primaries in this state, and the reality is that his challenger in the general is likely to be a Democrat in a post-Trump California. People hate Trump here, and getting tarred with the Trump brush is a good way to lose.

Pence informed Trump that he can't block Biden's win

(CNN)Vice President Mike Pence on Tuesday told President Donald Trump that he does not have the authority to block certification of President-elect Joe Biden's win when Congress meets to count electoral votes, sources told CNN.

Trump, who already had turned up the pressure on Pence to steal the election, warned him that it would be politically "damaging" for Pence to refuse to block certification, according to a source familiar with the conversation.

Pence gently informed Trump during the meeting that the power doesn't exist for him to derail the process, the source added.
