Panicking about Green Card interview...what to do?

My wife and I had to move in mid-December. We changed our address with USCIS and paid for forwarding services to our new address from USPS.

Sure enough, we get a notification on the case tracker on December 23rd that my wife’s green card interview was scheduled and that a notice was sent.

With our mail situation, we immediately called USCIS, and the agent confirmed that the letter was sent to our old address (of course). We asked for a Tier 2 representative, hoping that a Tier 2 would be able to at least give us the interview date, and we were told that the Tier 2 would call back in 2-7 days.

It’s January 2nd now and the notice hasn’t appeared at our new address, the Tier 2 hasn’t called, and the case tracker hasn’t changed. I’m getting more and more nervous with each passing day between the scheduling, but don’t know what else we can do at this point. We were able to confirm (by contacting the new tenant) that the letter had not come to our old address (presumably because it is being held by USPS for forwarding). I find it ridiculous that the USCIS customer service line can’t tell you the date of an interview that’s scheduled in their own system.

Any ideas?

I would continue to call USCIS periodically.

It's always a major risk to move in the middle of a US immigration process as USCIS can't handle address changes. We have seen so many on this very forum who were denied after missing RFE and interview letters due to moving. My recommendation to everyone is to NOT move unless you absolutely have to.

Also, it seems like USPS don't forward government mail anyway. So your letter is likely on its way back to USCIS again.

If you can't get a Tier2 to email or fax you the letter you will likely miss your interview and get denied. You will then have to request them to open your case again.

in my situation few months ago, when i was renewing my EAD and had to move thanks to covid-19 made me lost job because i cant pay the rent, all the notification letter i-797/NOA was sent to my new address using USPS forwarding system. except the card itself. they didnt sent it to old address ( i can tell from the tracking number) but they didnt sent to the new address aswell because it contain the EAD card. called USCIS, called USPS to stop that EAD being sent back but i failed. still being sent back to USCIS no matter what. a USPS staffs said it's ilegal for them to do that because USCIS request of dont forward the document.

since your mail contain no card / legal document beside the interview appointment letter, it should be forwarded ( hopefully im right). due to holiday season USPS being really crazy slow. all mail have been delayed.  but agree with the comment, keep calling USCIS ! hopefully u will get it soon. question : did you install daily mail notification from USPS? if you are on a certain zipcode u will get the notification with the pictures and all to let you know what document that u will receive soon.

good luck !

Yes. I have informed delivery for both the new address and old address. I check it every morning and see pictures of the mail.

I have almost the same situation here. I got the notification the same day as you, on December 23rd, and no mail yet. We moved in May and the EAD was sent to my new address, which is a good sign. I know about USPS delays, so hopefully that's the case.

But think about it, y'all got the update on the 23rd. 24th,25th,26th,27th holidays and weekend. The hard copy probably didn't left USCIS before Monday or Tuesday and yesterday was a postal holiday too. There's nothing to worry if the notice hasn't arrived yet with all the holidays.

I just got the notice! So happy about it!

And our interview is gonna be at 7:30 a.m., I didn't know they do interviews that early, but why not 😆

The USCIS agent asked if we wanted to reschedule. Couldn’t we simply call customer service and request rescheduling?

Rescheduling could cause an issue, too.  I have seen cases which were rescheduled, but the notice for the new interview was never received.  The next thing you know, the case is denied.  It would be a mess.  I'm not sure how often that happens, but it frequent enough to know rescheduling has its risks.
