Hence why Oprah did not bother spending 2 cents on a school in the US as she knows nowadays most poor kids simply do not give a ###### about learning.

Excellent point!

Dumb point. You don't know her reasoning - and I might just as well ask what is the point of any US funded foreign aid charity or philanthropic project.

Still, I hope Oprah will not give up on this side of the ocean where public schools grow more decrepit by the day. In discussing her South African venture, she lamented the condition of “inner city schools,” where Winfrey says she no longer goes. “The sense that you need to learn just isn't there," she said. "If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an Ipod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don't ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school."

That disheartening quote cries out for perspective. American children need to be convinced that the value of education is in its promise, not its guarantee. African children seem to understand that.

Exactly, and that's why it's not race that the deciding factor. That just made it pretty obvious. Race is incidental but the causes are other factors. Just so happens that there is a connection. And omg I just agreed with Marc-it's time for me to stop posting now.

Actually you agreed with the writer of the article - rather than with Marc who just plagiarised the words without credit or quotation.

That quote is a fair point - but the assumption then appears to be that Oprah should somehow be responsible for addressing the plight of inner city kids in the US rather than anywhere else. A private philanthropist spending her own money to fund a school in Africa is not the same as if the government were to do it with taxpayers money. Ultimately its her money to spend as she likes - but investing in education (anywhere) can only be a good thing, no?

Yes, but it speaks VOLUMES that she chose to ignore American kids.

I never thought I would ever agree with Infidel. But I was born in DC, I've spent all of my life in PG County (where I as a white person am a minority) and there's a LOT of truth to what he says. Whether or not it's pretty, it's how things are. I see it every day-I've seen it all of my life. My husband come here with nothing and end up making more money than me. Whereas an ex-coworker who was born and raised in the US with every opportunity at her fingertips was happier to live off the system and find ways to "cheat" the system than earn an honest dollar. We have everything free here-public education, there's no excuse whatsoever for that certain segment of society to NOT take advantage of the opportunity to better themselves. I know life can be hard, but the reality is the POOR person in the US is much better off than the AVERAGE person in many other countries. You cannot deny this is true-there's a reason we don't have nice restaurants in PG County-the customer base has an overwhelming sense of entitlement and tips poorly. This REALITY is evident in every little part of life here. People love to play the victim.

Prince George's county. Tough county. People in these areas know exactly which demographic is responsible for not only the extremely high murder rate but also the violence. Now that is an inconvenient truth.

Steve mentions law enforcement yet I personally know various cops who are actually told by their superiors not to arrest people as it makes their county's crime stats look bad. As as consequence crimes go unpunished. Look at marion Barry for crying out loud.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Nice, now your telling another poster who they are agreeing with! That limb you are way out on might not hold you.

She was agreeing to the passage you quoted and made the connection that the words were yours. They were not - regardless of whether you agree with them.

As marc pointed out she deliberately did not want to invest any money in inner city US schools because she knows the average kid and their parents do not give a ####### about learning.

Which just reinforces my early point of why do they insist on living in post industrial era inner cities which require skilled labor to acquire work. So they do not want to get an education, which is provided FREE of charge, and they do not want to move where they can find jobs. Yet anyone foreign, like myself, pointing this out is racist.

I have a proposal. How about we have an exchange program. Any African American who still feels wronged and hates this country for whatever reason can go back to their country and in their place we will accept the millions of people from Africa who would die to come here and make a life for themselves and their family. Setup a fund and I will sponsor that myself. Or as Alex in her infinite wisdom pointed out I must be racist towards specifically poor inner city African Americans. Must be a new kind of micro-racism

I think its easy to make trite comments about other peoples circumstances and their social attitudes when you're sitting in a position of relative privilege. I suspect its the bald generalisations that people object to.

Marc BTW - did not point anything out. He took someone elses words and used them for his own.

I don't mean to get smart but I have an engineering / analyst background so it is only natural to make an observation. I think you need to travel to DC and PG county in Maryland and then we will see if your opinion changes.

Marc BTW - did not point anything out. He took someone elses words and used them for his own.

Marc initially quoted Oprah directly on her reasoning. I watched her show and saw her say it myself.

PS So I guess Oprah would be generalizing herself then.

Quote tags are for quotes. Otherwise it looks like your stealing someone elses words - and clearly someone made that connection.

An engineering background doesn't justify stereotyped assumptions - neither does making assumptions about my background (i.e. where I've lived, visited etc). That is generally referred to as being condescending.

And you called it a quote like I highlighted above! It wasn't till others kept agreeing that it became stolen words...!

I agree, quotes or italic type should have been used, but we still knew it was a quote. I'm only pointing out that you called it a quote already.
