/r/The_Donald was tolerated for a LONG time, and it was one of the sickest, most vile subreddits I've ever seen... and I was on Reddit before they cleaned up all the rapey subreddits. They tolerated that subreddit for a long time, tried to get them to make changes, and then finally had to fire all their mods. Eventually they just had to shut it all down. I think it's safe to say The_Donald was given a LOT of rope.

 

Recognize too that Reddit (since we're zeroing in on Reddit specifically) is a business. Just like your local brick and mortar places of business are allowed to refuse you service on just about any grounds (protected classes excepted), Reddit has the right to pick and choose who and what subject matters they want on their platform. And imho it's why they thrive, and Parler is floundering.

 

Take /r/politics for example. It's an absolute echo chamber of far-left drivel. So you might think Reddit loves the far left and hates conservatives. Except that the far left discuss things like defunding the police and how in love with Bernie they are. The far right discuss things like killing black people and storming state governments to overthrow elections. Of course advertisers aren't going to be happy printing their ads in association with that kind of speech. And so of course Reddit aren't going to be happy with far right subreddits either.

 

And if you've been around awhile, you might have noticed /r/Conservative used to be a pretty decent conservative subreddit. Nobody gave it a second thought. But when The_Donald was shut down, a lot of them beat feet over to /r/Conservative, and so now it's starting to track further and further right. Eventually Reddit will close it down too. Not because Reddit wants to shut down conservative speech, but because they don't want extremist speech on their platform.

Very interesting about those subreddits. I stay away from the political spaces on there because they seem so skewed one way or another.

They're all just different ways to make people believe their random thoughts about hot pockets and Hitler matter.

VJ forums qualify as social media. Your posts here are "control[led] and exploit[ed]" by the owner of VJ, and every time you refresh a page you're being used for monetization. So the answer should be self-evident: people are looking to connect beyond their immediate surroundings.

Many people on social media sites are just looking for attention.  As I acknowledged, VJ is a social media site, but it has a specific purpose except for some forums.  We can always ignore the ads which is what I do, but someone still makes money off them.

I'm tempted to point out one individual in particular, but I'll keep it light.

 

btw you don't even need to click on the ads for them to generate revenue in many cases. It just needs to "print" on your browser. But imho ads aren't even the worst thing about social media. I'd love for the US to adopt GDPR-style laws about how our personal information can be used.
