Is there some form I have to fill out that details every single little thing I am bringing with me? Or is it enough to label all my boxes according to what is in each and then have a corresponding list to show them? Do they actually go through everything or just have a dog sniff it all?

Just not sure what's involved with the moving process. Please help if you've already been through this. Thank you.

I HATE miles, gallons, pints, words spelled without u's, and all that other jazz...

Yes there are US Customs forms but it all depends how you are shipping the stuff. ie taking it with you or sending in by shippers.

Our shippers sent us the customs forms which we filled out and then when they pack they produced a shipping list.

I didn't fill it out in great detail but listed in general terms what was being imported.

Oh ok. Thanks.

So if I'm just bringing everything myself it may be enough to just label the boxes and have a corresponding sheet to hand the officer?

I'm not sure about when you are crossing yourself with your belongings if there are any forms to complete but I think doing packing lists would probably be a good idea. I moved with ABF and did packing lists...... I didn't mention every absolute item in each box but a general list.... I clearly marked each box with a number in black marker and made the list to correspond to each box #. I phoned ahead to customs at the border crossing of Sweetgrass, Montana where my stuff would be going through coming from Alberta and they told me they x-ray the whole load......truck drives through and if they have any suspicions they will make the driver unload the whole truck and can go through any of the boxes if they feel like it. I could tell when my stuff got here that nothing had been touched at all. I think there are plenty of others here on VJ that have driven through and had no problems..... hopefully a few of them will post. Good Luck!

United had me label all my boxes with general information such as "Kitchen - dishes" and created their own inventory list. They specifically mentioned the labelling was required for customs & immigration.

I loaded up my car with items I wasn't having shipped. The agents at the POE (Buffalo Peace Bridge) didn't inspect anything or request an inventory list. However, some criminal-types at the same crossing weren't having a similar reception as I. ;)

We just had a list of the boxes general contents - 4 small boxes Personal Items, 2 grocery bags of kitchen etc. 1 suitcase of clothing - nothing was itemized individually, just catogorized by box or container. They never asked to see our list (came in by land), never asked what we were taking through (we just packed my stuff in our car and drove it down). Just our experience.

We did list "expensive" items "heirloom quilt" etc., but didn't write down all the small stuff.
