I see a lot of posts about those traveling from Canada to the US during the Pandemic, but I was wondering if anyone has traveled from the US to Canada?  My husband and I are looking into a trip starting the middle of this February to middle of April.  We would typically never plan a trip this long but we want to ensure proper quarantine before we even join a bubble family at our destinations (we are thinking about visiting two provinces during the trip - one a month).  I have done a lot of research and believe we will be okay but I wanted to check here to see if anyone has an experience.

Some additional details about our trip.  My husband is a Canadian citizen currently going through AOS.  We would be traveling with his AP.  I am a USC and his spouse.  We believe we will be okay as he is a Canadian visiting his parents and sister, and I am his spouse (family reunification).  We will arrive at the border with a detailed quarantine plan (his parents have a basement that we plan on staying in two weeks before we come in contact with them.  His parents would help us with groceries before we arrive and we would have a separate entrance and washroom facilities we can use until our two weeks of quarantine are up.  We will download the proper ArriveCan app and it might be a bit much but I plan on asking them to take pictures of the location to present to the border if necessary too.  We also have zero intention of going in public at all except for walks or drives even after the two weeks are up.  Additionally, during this pandemic I have been working from home and have the capability of working anywhere that has WiFi, so we will not have any issues about the necessary time to properly quarantine and see his family for some time after.

Please note, we don't take this lightly and considering the restrictions in both countries, would prefer if his family could visit here instead.  But unfortunately that is not an option, so we are looking to follow all of the rules and make the safest trip possible.  We don't take this pandemic lightly and honestly have done so little here in NJ and I haven't seen so much of my family during this pandemic as well because we are trying to reduce our contact with everyone as much as possible.  But I have at least seen my parents and siblings, so if my husband can do that safely and legally, we would like to make this trip.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I live in a border state, and I thought all non-essential travel across the land border was suspended until further notice...

yes. We did in November 2020.

I am a Canadian citizen and so have a constitutional right to enter Canada.  The COVID regulations allow my wife who is an LPR of the USA to enter Canada because she is married to a Canadian citizen.

On the return as a US citizen I’ve a constitutional right to enter the USA, and as an LPR my wife has a statutory right to enter the USA.

under current rules you risk being denied entry because you are expected to isolate. But read on ...

that might be ok.  In our case, the immigration officer was happy that we were going to a completely vacant house for two weeks.

The one thing missing is that you didn’t mention is bringing proof that you are married to a Canadian  citizen.  We were asked for our original marriage certificate at airline checkin and upon entering Canada. After handing the Canadian immigration officer our marriage certificate, we were asked for our date of marriage.  So be prepared to answer details about your marriage.

The federal government of Canada will want to call you while you are in quarantine. Be prepared for inane questions about how you are getting fresh air (it was -15 Celsius when they called).

Thus your mobile phones need to work in Canada.  Now is the time to switch to T Mobile unless you enjoy roaming fees.

Finally if you fly on WestJet there is a program where you can opt to get tested on arrival and reduce your quarantine time if you agree to get a follow up test.  I suggest exploring this route and instead of initially staying at a relative’s home, stay in a hotel for a few days.  Unfortunately for us, this program started a day after our arrival in Canada.

@Jorgedig - you are correct, but family reunification is considered essential travel and towards the end of the year I believe Canada expanded family reunification to include extended family (aunts, uncles, cousins) and significant others.  And all Canadians have the right to return to return, so I guess I am more just wondering about myself as I am not Canadian and a spouse.

@Mike E - Thank you SO VERY MUCH for your response!!! Everything you said aligns with exactly what I thought and what I researched.  I always doubt myself and worry especially when so many people believe that the border is closed means no travel at all.  So I wanted to make sure I wasn't mistaken in everything I have researched.

  • Noted about the immigration office being happy about a completely vacant house.  That is good to know and I will explore that more to see if we have an option for something like that.
  • And noted about the marriage certificate.  We do plan on brining that to prove I am his wife.  We will also have all our immigration information for our return to the US as my husband is traveling with an AP and I am worried about that causing issues too (which I believe everyone has said not to worry about but I will).
  • Good to know about T-Mobile too! Luckily our US Verizon phone extends to Canada and I've used it many many times before.
  • But your information about WestJet is amazing!!! I had no idea and usually fly AirCanada because it has more availability from my location, but the option for a test upon arrival is amazing! I will explore this too.

Thanks for sharing your experience!!!

You are welcome.  Also you mentioned traveling to multiple provinces.  Each province has its  own COVID regulations. Some regulations require quarantining when traveling between provinces.

Thanks @Mike E - Yeah, we completely expect to quarantine between provinces especially since if we do travel within Canada it would be from the West to the Atlantic, so I know there have been different bubbles, and also know it could change as the weeks go on too.  So I will work to stay updated with that.  Thanks for making sure I knew that!! I very much appreciate the help.

Hopefully we will see a rollout of more  vaccines before I have to try to make a trip in May!  Let us know how it goes please.

When my wife came earlier this year it was smooth and relatively easy. If you're not visiting a spouse or someone you want to be physically in contact with depending on the set up you can quarantine with family or friends. It's not that bad just inconvenient.

Which is in addition to the 14 day quarantine.

My husband got tested before coming to see me for Xmas as a precaution and it was too soon to show positive. His symptoms started 9 days after his exposure to the person who he found out later was infected. So we're together now, but still fighting this illness. Please take as many precautions as you can.

I am so sorry to hear that! Will do and I hope he recovers soon!

Thanks! That tip is good to know.  We are only going for family reunification, so staying with them is our only plan.
