HI:

Is anyone in AOS stage and does not have a SS# issued still? A couple friends of ours, filed AOS in February and since they let the actual marriage happen near the end of 90 days almost to the end, they couldn't get social security issued. She currently has EAD/AP,  but no SS# because of covid closure of offices. Is there someone on a similar situation and what can be done since the doors are not open to the public at SSA agency?

Thanks

She didn't apply for SSN in the EAD form?

If not, she will have to mail her EAD to a SSO to get one issued.

No, they tried to apply in person, but for some reason they never could issue the SS card. Something with the verification (forgot the name) couldn't go through. The EAD/AP has been issued and is now 6 month to expire again. So now this mess is even getting bigger, because of their slow movement and Covid.

Can you further explain how the process to get SS# issued with a EAD? They have talked to the local SSO and they dont let them do an appointment or even what to do next about getting a SS# assigned

Short explanation: Her USC husband is retired over 20+ years and on "turtle" mode. She is also up in age and English is not a priority for her. Money is not an issue, but w/o a green card and no SS#, to me this looks just like a perfect storm and I am trying to help them out. They have a lawyer, but the SS# wasn't part of the deal to get issued, just the AOS

This is her first SSC, so she has to apply for it in person, and the offices are doing in person appointments for that. They're gonna have to convince them that she needs the number now, either for a job or to file taxes.

If they accept to receive it by mail, she will mail the request form SS5 with her EAD. They will mail her stuff back after 1 week or two and the card within 3 weeks.

The actual physical EAD card needs to be mailed in?

Ok, thank you. I will tell them. They are very "worried" to send her actual card in.

At this point, it is what it is. I had to send mine twice to get my name changed.

Well, i appreciate the info you have given me. What i have been told is that the local SSO denied them an appointment because Covid. They have a letter stating that not enough info was given the first time to issue a SS#. I would think they need to be at able to send EAD and or something else to supply evidence of identification. SSO is not helping out and they would like to even adjust last years return (for filing as married jointly and the non received stimulus). this years 2020 return is sneaj=king on them again and so is the next stimulus. Tomorrow is Monday so hopefully there is somekinda answer.

They can always call another office. They are doing in person appointments, but they have to keep trying, sometimes the person that answers the call is not willing to help. When they call for a supervisor, they schedule the appointment.

You can also tell them to apply to renew their EAD when there's 180 days left on the card.

Exactly. I know my local social security office is offering appointments. Other offices are not. I also recommend that they just call around and find an office that is.
