After talking with six experts in advertising, retail, and ecommerce, I was able to mostly solve the case of the butt-flap pajama ad. The butt-flap PJs managed to take over the internet through a combination of wonky brand safety measures, a few marketing strategies including provocative sexual imagery, and a good amount of luck. 

"It may just be a happy accident for them, or it may be part of some sort of a strategy — one doesn't know," Greg Sterling, the vice president of Insights at online marketing company Uberall, said. "But, it's pretty hard to engineer a viral ad."

The first time I saw it was on that Shkreli article in Elle, now it was/is everywhere. Except on VJ, I can report.

It only shows up on my phone. I can tell you precisely what I have bought using my phone over the past week:

 

Sephora (eyeshadow palette, hair conditioner)

Doordash (two orders from a Thai restaurant)

Nordstrom (throw pillows, jogger bottoms)

Saks (teapot, throw blanket)

Heretic Parfum (candle)

Smallflower (hand soaps)

 

I swear I didn't look at Agent Provocateur or Fleur du Mal so I am truly perplexed. No bumless onesie on the laptop though.

The stuff I did do was very respectable! How is a teapot shameful? Sounds like a bad joke, but it isn't.

 

Just purchased a new pair of shoes on sale (h/t to Boiler who pointed me to them), a back scratcher (my human back scratcher is out of the country atm) and some coffee. All very respectable.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply you were the source of the back scratcher advice. It came through my own frustration at cold/dry winter air, and I had co-opted a wooden fork into service as a back scratcher but it really doesn't do the job very well. I hadn't considered how much I depended on someone else to scratch my back/rub lotion on it until that someone else got on a plane and flew 5500 miles away.

Actually I don't have too many shoes. Not a weakness. I have bought three pairs -- a new pair of sneakers for working out, and two pairs of inexpensive canvas ones -- in the past year. No heels at all -- where would I even wear heels right now? I would put my grand total of shoe expenditure this year at around $250 -- most of that came from the sneakers. New Balance, since I try to buy American.
