I submitted my application for naturalization on October 2019 (NYC office)  having my biometrics taken on Nov 2019. I was estimated for a completion time in August 2020. Pandemic hit the states and my estimated disappeared online. In October 2020 I was scheduled for an interview for Dec 1 2020. Interview went well (although since I got divorced during my 5 years in the US and I changed my name I gave him my divorce papers from California and he said “here in NY I’m not used to seeing this divorce decree from California, but let me have a copy so I can see your name changed and all good”). His last words before I left that office were “let me double check that everything is correct and you’ll get a letter in the next few weeks with the steps to take”. He didn’t approve right there of course and clicked the “a decision cannot be made yet about your application” in the N652 form.

Since then I’ve been a bit concerned about that whole divorce papers thing and checking online for an update. Nothing so far, but today I see online how my estimated completion time has appeared again (after disappearing completely in August during quarantine) and now it says “estimated completion time 7 months” after having my interview back in Dec 1. Is this a normal thing? Anyone has had this happen before? If I gave him my divorce papers from the court in California, what else can they ask for regarding my divorce?

I would not put too much faith on the estimated completion time.  This seems to be generated by a computer based on some sort of basic formula.  It seems to be very inaccurate at the moment probably because of Covid causing big changes in timelines.  I think all you can guess from the estimated time is that the computer has seen that you were not approved at the interview and so it says 7 months.

Thank you very much. I was just approved and scheduled for my oath ceremony.
