Social security needs to be updated before driver's license?

Hi,

Does social security status need to be updated before updating the driver's license?

I called the local social security office, and they told me to mail the passport if I wanted to update the status.

But they said that I can also wait until the office reopens as it's not urgent. Probably I'll just wait a few more months to update the status.

No there is no urgency to update social security.  Many people have not updated for even many years.

I just went through the same process myself and this is what I found out:

- DL (I'm in Florida and not sure how other States operate) was replaced in person. I was unable to replace it on-line. Since I don't have a passport, they scanned in my original naturalization certificate into the system and issued a new DL.

- since SS offices are not open for public I was given the option to either mail in my original Naturalization Certificate and wait until they process the change and issue a new SSC and mail back my NC. Or just wait until they are open for public again.

Since I am not too crazy about sending my NC by mail i decided to wait.

I also asked if there is a time period to replace/update SSC and I was told that there is no time limit and it is not necessary to rush. System itself will show changes.

I hope this info helped

Why do you need an updated DL as a citizen? Nothing about this was mentioned at my ceremony, just the SSN.

Oh, I was curious whether DL contains information about the immigrant status (like on what immigration basis this DL was issued). Probably DL doesn't contain that

MA may not ask immigration information on the Driver's license application but many states have a checkbox that asks for being US citizen. Only US citizens are allowed to use online services in those states.

Oh, the reason I needed to replace my DL is because I moved.
There’s no need to replace it otherwise.
But one thing I didn’t ask was if our DL reflects our legal status.

I would assume it does??

I had to show proof of legal residence to get my DL, but even if it has that info I can’t think of anything you’d use your DL for where your citizenship status is relevant.

If it’s a real ID then it reflects that you are legally present in the US (and can be used for federal ID). I don’t think it differentiates beyond that - whether LPR, USC etc.

THe reason it is asked, is for voting registration.

Curious what states only allow citizens to use online services? You’re talking about DMV?

Massachusetts RMV only checks if the name matches the SSN through the Social Security On-Line Verification system.

Thid is correct to get a driver's licence; to get a RealID though, they do check your immigration status.

The topic of the thread is SSN. The RMV doesn't verify lawful status on what the SSN numident says. It verifies the presented lawful status documents through DHS SAVE system.

Topic of the thread is what should be updated first...

OP, there's no need to update your driver's licence, unless it expires, or, if you haven't already, to get a RealID.
