Hey all,

Hope all are staying well!

Looking for your opinion/any advice for my situation.

I received my green card last month after Adjusting status from a K1 after marriage. It was about 1.5yrs between getting married and getting the green card approved

so I should have received a 2yr conditional but they sent a 10yr. From reading other posts I understand the steps I need to take are:

1. Send greencard back with a i90

2. Wait for receipt notice

3. Setup infopass appointment to get a stamp to allow travel

Now the issue I have (and i'm sure many others) is that due to covid I'm unable to:

1) Have my SSN restrictions removed due to offices being closed,

2) Guarantee a infopass appointment to get the stamp

So my predicament is, do I send back now and gamble on an infopass appointment. Or wait till mid next year and do it then when things (hopefully) open back up a bit? (not asking anyone to predict whats going to happen with covid & gov openings :)). Just any advice from similar situation or what you would do if it was you :).

File I-90 online, so you don't need to send the card now. They will issue a RFE for you to send the card when they're ready to issue the new one.

You can still request an info pass appointment. I have my appointment tomorrow because my name was wrong on the card. I filed for I-90 online and still haven't sent my GC yet.

Ah you are a genius! Great advice, thank you!

You can still remove restrictions on SS card. You need to get in touch with your local SS office, father all the documents and send in your green card - track able mail - include the envelope with paid postage (fedex/usps/ups) so they can send it back to you once done.

Thanks, much appreciated! I'm hesitant to post all of that original documentation so will hold out on that for now.

@Ayrton I submitted the online i90 this afternoon, thanks again! How was your experience getting an appointment? I've read some stories that make it sound quite difficult at the moment.

It was pretty simple. I told them I needed proof of status because I was sending my card to get replaced. They called later and scheduled the appointment.

This is the one of the few cases where I would be willing send a green card to the SS office to get an SS card. Since the green card is a throwaway. If SS loses the card, no problem.

Otherwise, since an LPR is required to have the green card all the time, sending a valid green card to SS is both a non-starter and a misdemeanor..

So call your local SS office to arrange for the sending in your SS application with SS card. Then when you get the SS card back (or when SS confirms they lost it), file your I-90.

Before you do any of this, make physical and electronic copies of both sides of your green card.
