Another consideration would be having abandoned/failed to remove conditions/ surrendered your green card, you may not be eligible for ESTA, and would then have to apply for a B visa if you wanted to visit the USA.

She was very clear about their intention to move to UK for a long time, possible for life.

So go back and if indeed you decide to continue there, surrender you GC. By doing that, in the future, you can reapply for a new visa/GC.

She never said they have to leave ASAP.

Timeline

Right, with what I read they were thinking about it. That's why I said I would wait. My husband and I have thought about it, doesn't mean were going to do it asap.  If she's willing to abandon her GC then that is good. But others would not, as it takes money and time to process, just to give up. And if they changed their mind, and wanted to come back it would be a pain.  Citizenship would give her freedom to come back and forth as she pleased. 

N-400 Citizenship

Date mail out application: December 11th 2020

Date received application: December 22nd 2020

NOA1: January 14th 2021 

Fee Waiver: Approved 

Biometrics Reuse Letter: February 12th 2021
