SSA asks that anytime immigration status changes that you inform them of the change. Non-immigrant (K-1) --> LPR (Green-Card) --> US Citizen (Naturalized)

You must report any of the changes listed below to us, because they may affect your eligibility for SSI and your benefit amount:

  • change in citizenship or immigration status;

http://www.ssa.gov/notices/supplemental-se...report-ussi.htm

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

:lol: no, it's not a problem, I've just seen several questions about it lately I guess. We all repeat previous things anyway, it's hard to keep track of all the posts.

YuAndDan, that webpage is irrelevant unless the person is already getting a SS check. Those are not general rules for all people with SS numbers, it is for those receiving "Supplemental Securiy Income".

There is no requirement that I know of to report changes in immigration status to the SSA.

If you find one though, please tell us! :)

EDIT: OK I found it, the language is much less strong than the link you provided:

What if my immigration status or citizenship changed?

If your immigration status changed or you became a U.S. citizen, you should tell Social Security so your records can be updated. To get your immigration status or citizenship corrected, you need to show documents that prove your new status or citizenship. Only certain documents can be accepted as proof of citizenship for new and replacement cards. These include your U.S. passport, a Certificate of Naturalization or a Certificate of Citizenship. If you are not a U.S. citizen, Social Security will ask to see your current immigration documents.
