If you banked with HSBC and had to use a fee machine to withdraw cash it could be expensive.

Hello,

I just opened an online account with them, how "expensive" would the fee be? I'm simply curious.. just a sample/estimate from your experience..Thank you.

Read through the paperwork - it will tell you all about it.

Thanks for this thread everyone! i applied today for a Macy's card.. I tried to get my CDN Sears card transferred to the US today, but they won't do it. I've been a customer in Canada for almost 10 years, but they said I have to re-apply in the US and start from scratch all over again. :( GAH!

Anyway, I'll keep you posted on the Macy's card...

My wife who does not work and has absolutely no credit history to speak of, was receiving credit card applications in the post being in the states only for 6 months? I have no idea what marketing list or how she got added? She did apply and did receive a Chase credit card with no problems, and she continues to get other offers. I would be patient and wait. I think the applications will just start being sent to you. Be careful and pay it off every month. Dont carry a balance or you will pay alot more that what you purchased.

Sorry for asking this but as of this time they have not given me the final approval so I cannot see anything about fees/schedules in the paperwork (so far what I printed out were the step-by-step instructions and very basic relevant accnt. info). I am about to send them a personal check to activate the new account.

I was hoping an early info can prevent me from doing unconscious errors. Thank you.

It is difficult to answer because you will be charged by whoever owns the ATM and then again by HSBC for using a "foreign" ATM. If it is a machine in say a bar the overall cost might be more than using an ATM at another bank. But as a rough guide depending on the charge by the ATM owner $2 - $6 a withdrawal.

With an excellent credit rating in the UK, I was horrified when all I was offered was a secure credit card with an interest rate of 24% !! That was 3 months ago, and since that time, my husband has put me on his AMEX account and he has been using the AMEX with my name on for purchases etc. I have also opened a few store cards, bought a few items, and cleared the balance immediately. Even though it has only been a few months, I have now been offered a credit card with a $1000 limit and no security so my credit is obviously building.

That's good, Britty - I was wondering how long it would actually take to go from 'no credit' to 'at least reasonably ok credit' so long as you do all the right things... how many months has it been, roughly? :)

it has been 3-4 months now for me to get to ok credit so much quicker than the UK would be. I'm hopeful that in a year or so I will be considered "good" or even "very good". I will continue to open store cards, buying small things and paying off the bill promptly in the hope that the creditors will write nice things on my credit report !!

Thank you Lansbury, just the rough guide suffices! I appreciate it. I can picture it better now.

Be careful not to apply for too much credit too quickly! They take this as a sign they you need access to money and could be in trouble. I would say one new account every 4 months should be the max. Also, don't ever close accounts. If you don't want to use it, just cut it up. Your credit score is based your debt to credit ratio. So the lower precentage of credit you are using, the better.

It's been over a year for me, and I only have a so-so credit, though I've always paid everything on time. I thought my score would grow faster than it does :( I guess, length of credit history matters quite a bit, simply paying bills on time isn't enough... Now I'll just wait for my credit cards to mature and see what happens..

I think that is really all you can do. Read Suze Orman's book. She explains things in simple terms. She also has a show every sat night on MSNBC. I think she is great!

I wanted to have my own credit separate from my hubby's credit . I have excellenct credit back home. I have 2 credit cards and a line of credit back home . I don't use the cards or credit line, but I am also paying off the credit line from down here.

Since my good credit is worthless dowen here, I tried to open a department store credit card to no avail. They said I didn't have any existing credit Ummm DUH! That's why I needed the card in the first place?!

Anyways, I recieved a credit card application in the mail from Capital One. I was about to throw it in the garbage when my hubby told me to just send it in, ya never know. So I did.

I week later I got a Visa card with a limit of 500 unsecured. I didn't have to put anything down. Then I purchased something and paid it off right away. A week later they upped my credit limit to 750.00 said if I keep making my monthly payments for the next 3 months they will up it again to 2000.00. I always pay the full amount on the card so I'm not being charged interest.

Now of course I get tons of credit card/department card invites! But this one card is enough for me.

Ask your hubby to add you on his Credit card, assuming he has good credit. Add your name to those utility bills, and mostly and most important if you guys have a house or condo, add your name to the list. In less than 2 years my wife went from 0 credit to over +700 in les than 2 years. Now she got her own store card, and funny things it's the same store she 1st applied for a card and got rejected. The name of the game is be patient, pay on time.

Anyway, I'll keep you posted on the Macy's card...

99% of the time at department stores...if you don't get an instant approval, you're denied. With the major credit card companies, that's not always true, but since it's so much "easier" to get a store card, it's usually a denial.
