My only option now that I can see is a secured credit card which is against everything i believe in. why give a bank MY money to play with?

You'll get your money back after a certain amount of time (in my case it was one year). A secured card seems like the best option for those who don't have a credit history in the US :(

since the first month i came here, i apply and of course the bank didnt approve me, then my husband put me on his account, and they start sending me offers by mail from different banks, a month later i get capital one limit 3000 $, with no annual fee, first year no interest rate, after that 9 %

This can only work if your spouse has good credit history which isn't always the case.

Hi,

I got my first Macy's Card without any problem after few attempts to trying to get the unsecured credit card such as chase, north bank, and so on. Few days later, i applied CapitolOne unsecured credit card online and it is approved after 1 week. They give me small limit to start with but at least i am building my credit history now. My advise is try to get Macys store card and CapitolOne card...Good luck!!

Applied for a Target card and was....................... you guessed it REJECTED!! Lack of Credit History

My only thought that i can see is this.. I had my SSN since the mid-nineties and perhaps they look at that? I dunno.. grasping at straws, but when Macy's & Target turn ya down.. you know there's not much hope..

My only option now that I can see is a secured credit card which is against everything i believe in. why give a bank MY money to play with?

You can try the partially secured card (BofA offered me the 99 deposit for 500 credit limit last year and I started from there).

It's a good start. They sent me back the deposit after 8 months

Yep i understand the "hows" on these cards, but it's the principle - WHY would i give a bank my hard earned money to play with for 8-12 months ?? Banks are already sucking people dry with fees/ interest etc..

*sigh - end of rant

Look at it another way. Way should the bank lend the money I have deposited with them to people who haven't established that they are credit worthy. The bigger the risk they take of losing money the less interest they can pay me. :innocent:

I understand that, but this is the price most of us have to pay for moving to another country :( The bank has no idea who we are.

I had no credit history when I came to the US, so having a secured card didn't hurt my feelings in any way, cause this is what I would have to start with anywhere in the world. I imagine it's much harder to deal with this when you already have good credit in your country.

CapitalOne may issue an unsecured card to a person without credit history, Sin/NJ Traveler is correct. Most likely, with a $300 credit limit and some kind of an annual fee, but at least it's something! :)

I had the biggest laugh I've had in a long time this morning. I received a Visa approval from some unknown company. Here are the high points:

- $200 limit

- 24.9% interest rate

- $69 enrollment fee

- $69 annual membership fee

- I think I saw a transaction fee also... not sure.... it's already shredded

By the time you pay the $140 enrollment and membership fees, and pay the interest rate and transaction fees, you'll be right back down to zero available credit. Think I'll jump on that.

I called and opted out of getting pre-screened card offers, because I was getting so many that I was tired of shredding them. Most of the offers I was getting looked legit, but I recall a few that wanted me to send them money upfront. For "processing fees"...

We've got one of those cards (well, one very similar...) DH had lousy credit so he had no credit cards at all when we got married... it took two years for anyone to even approve us for one of those rip-off 'so you're on the verge of bankruptcy' cards! I was utterly horrified at the fees involved with it, making it next to useless, except for one thing - it's a stepping stone to better things! Once we'd had it a few months the offers started rolling in and they gradually got better and better until we eventually got offered two 'real' credit cards (and took them up on it, of course!) Sooner or later we'll close the horrendous fee-paying account, because they're trying to suck us dry! But not for awhile - we just don't use it because they can't charge you interest on things you don't purchase. And hopefully it's also improving MY credit score by existing and having six months more records than the others...

Just got back from Macys after applying for the store card, which I got with no problems at all. Small $200 limit - but why do I need more than that? I plan to buy 1 small thing a month from there and pay it all back. I'm concidering applying for capital one - but I think I'll wait for a few months - I got my macys card now and I'm an authorized user on my husbands credit card.

Why not wait until Capital One send you a pre-approved offer? They seem one of the more reputable credit card companies doing that sort of thing and seem to do it quite quickly when someone has built up a reasonable credit score. That way you are not risking having a rejection on your credit record.

Good point :)

How long is it until you start receiving offers? I noticed that some people on here receive offers pretty quickly (ok - so they may not be the best ones) - the only mail that is ever addressed to me is from USCIS!! lol
