Wondering clarifications from whoever has applied for US passport.
1. Do we need to submit our original Citizenship certificate and Birth Certificate? The passport agent at the post office returns the original to us after verifying its originality? OR we need to send the original with the application to the Agency and Agency would send back originals with the passport?
2. Do we need to notarize photocopy?
3. Do we need to submit secondary Evidence also in addition to the above two documents?

While applying for kids through naturalization of parents:
1. Do we need to submit original Citizenship certificate and Marriage Certificate? OR the passport agent at the post office returns the original to us after verifying its originality?

If we are applying together as family, AND if we need to send originals with the application to the agency, how can we submit original citizenship certificate for our application and kids' application at the same time?

Send both original and photocopy: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/how-apply/citizenship-evidence.html

  • Submit your original evidence of U.S. citizenship.
  • Submit a photocopy of the front (and back, if there is printed information) of your original evidence of U.S. citizenship.

It's sent back to you in different envelopes: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/passport-help/faqs.html

Will I receive my new passport and my documents back in one envelope?

Passport Book Only: You may receive your newly-issued passport and your citizenship documents (e.g. previous passport, birth certificate) separately. Please contact the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) if you do not receive a second mailing within 10 business days of receiving the first. We can send your passport book using a 1-2 day delivery service.

Passport Card Only: You may receive your newly-issued passport card and your citizenship documents (e.g. previous passport, birth certificate) separately. Please contact NPIC if you do not receive a second mailing within 10 business days of receiving the first. We only send the passport card via First Class Mail. We do not send cards using 1-2 day delivery services.

Passport Book and Card: You may receive three separate mailings; one with your citizenship documents (e.g. previous passport, birth certificate), one with your newly-issued passport book, and one with your newly-issued passport card. Please contact NPIC if you do not receive the second or third mailing within 10 business days of the previous mailing.

Each Post Office handles this differently. Also, the Agency can also get confused since the applications are usually treated separately. Thus, it's recommended to apply for 1 at a time.

1. Original

2. No, its a photocopy to save them the trouble.

3. Yes, a drivers license, make a copy of both sides, the USPS only wants to see it, and return it right away.

1. Kids

Wait till yours is complete, you will need to submit your Original Certificate once again. Multiple kids? Second child after first child complete, and all returned.

Pay to expedite, it will be 6 weeks for each person.

Submitted mine and my kid same time, I asked the lady at the post office about the need for original certificate with both, she said it would be no problem as she would send the applications together, it was indeed no problem.

I just returned from post office after applying for passports.

Thanks everyone who replied. Thanks @SusieQQQ.. my experience is same as yours.

Here is to anyone in the same boat as I was last week.

- The agent said they would send all applications together and the agency would know that kids are using parent's citizenship certificate. So, no need to wait until we get ours before applying for kids.

- Originals they took: Citizenship certificates, birth certificates of kids and green cards.

- They took photostat copies when needed so at least in our location, we didnt have to carry all photostats ourselves.
