both are fattening and should not be really eaten on a diet. which sucks because both are two of one of my favorite things to eat!

normal hummus contains large amounts of tahini which is sesame paste. EXTREMELY high in fat. unless you can stick to eating only 2 tablespoons of hummus, stay away. (i for one, eat the entire container or bowl) ;)

and falafel is fried. so...fattening also. if you want a pita similarly flavored, i'd get a chicken schwarma. a lot less fattening. or do what i recommend below:

but if you really love both and still want to lose weight, find a recipe for both where you can leave out tahini for the hummus, and maybe bake falafels. also stay away from tahini sauce for the falafels. but buying store bought (or from a restaurant) will definitely keep those pounds on.

dieting is no fun!!! lol

Jen is right about the hummus, but if you make it yourself (so super easy), it will not have any of those hydrnated fats that are not good for anyone. It will still be high in fat, but the good kind of fat, a healthy fat. So on your diet if you just crave some, have a little homemade. The trick is little- like jenn, I don't understand how 2 T is a serving.

Exactly. I've even popped the falafel in the oven and slapped it on the foreman grill. Doesn't taste that bad either. :D

and for a sauce, I add a little fresh non-fat plain yogurt with fresh tomatoes and onions, a sprinkle of cumin or any spice I am in the mood for. yummy.

Like MBP said, if you make hummus yourself you can make it low fat by not adding too much tahineh and cut out the olive oil on the top. I don't like too much tahineh myself so I only add about a tablespoon. I use canned chick peas so I make it with one can chick peas, one clove of garlic, the juice of one lemon, one tablespoon tahineh and salt to taste. I omit the olive oil on top. You can eat it with veggies like cucumbers and celery instead of pita bread to make it low carb.

I have been getting a mediterranean wrap for lunch lately at our cafeteria and it has hummus but only like the 2 tablespoons worth. It has cucumbers, onions, feta, hummus, roasted red peppers, olives and shredded lettuce and I get it on a whole wheat wrap bread and it satisfies my hummus craving and is sooo yummie!!! I think it's all of 6 points on weight watchers but sooooo worth every bite!

unfortunately i think majority of arabian food is fattening for us americans, i mean all that rice and bread, i thought for sure the 9 months i was in jordan i would lose weight, i mean, no fast food, never really drank soda, etc. but 5 lbs was it....all that fried cauliflower, eggplant, eggs, potatoes, high starch high carb foods.... i try to avoid it now, as i am VERY unhappy with my weight right now, but its sooo hard, when everyone else is eating at, and i have to prepare a whole seperate meal for myself...its so much easier just to give in and dig in!
