Hello,

I'm in a weird situation: Four years ago I travelled to the US under a J visa for a university exchange. While I was at my exchange university, I got a social security card so I could work part time for the school as an intramural soccer referee.

I returned to the US a couple of years later for my Masters under a F-1 visa and I used that same social security to again work for the school I was at part-time. I'm now in the US again after marrying my beautiful wife and currently waiting for my AOS and I-765 to be approved. But I have been offered a job. Can I use that social security card to work for this company? The card is 'active', and according the Social Security Administration the card is eligible for employment, but am I?

No. An SS card does not in itself grant work authorization. Most likely your SS card says you need DHS work authorization. While your AOS is pending you will need an EAD card to work

Sadly not. SSN is not the same as work authorization. Work authorization only comes from USCIS in the form of a valid EAD or a valid work visa or a green card.

You can not legally work until you get an EAD.

Your Social Security Number does not convey employment authorization.  Your SS card does not make you eligible for employment.  It's a means for your employer to report your income and pay taxes.

Your J visa and F-1 visa authorized you to work on campus for your schools.

As you are adjusting status based on marriage to a USC, you will need an EAD to legally work.

There are negative affects of working. Not many people who work are happy. So be careful in what you get into.

Solely that SSN does not allow you to work. Maybe that's a benefit, a plus :)

Earning money is a real bummer.... How is this helpful?

You're right.  I don't understand being lazy and the "negative affects of working."

Oh, other people get unsolicited meandering PMs from a certain poster too, lol
