Regarding this line. I saw numerous posts before that

-> right after oath ceremony, you are able to register to vote (by doing this, you are already acknowleding you are a US citizen even before updating SS).

-> Some oath offices let people register to vote prior to covid times (in the next room to oath ceremony).

Using this logic, I think that you can claim that you are US citizen elsewhere (when you can vote in federal election before SS update).

I did my oath when you could register to vote right after the ceremony, though I did it online when I got home that afternoon. I have stated I was a citizen on my tax return and voted (in both the primary and presidential elections) last year. SS still not updated. No problem with anything. SS number does not determine your status.

Yeah, exactly.

I still haven't updated SS either.

Hi, Im in TX and also been trying to get an appointment to update my ss.

Did you get your ss updated?

Thank God I became US citizen in  June 2020. I have called ss several times and I always been told to mail my certificate which honestly I don’t feel comfortable with that.   My reason to update is because tax season is coming up and for tax report you have to answer the question if you are citizen or not.

Just thought I'd update you on this. I filed my taxes Fed and State and already received my returns. Haven't updated social security yet.

Folks there should really be no impact of not updating your social security number right away, like literally none unless you are coming to a retirement age. In rare cases you do (employment, voting etc), You already have the NC and or Passport to prove that.

You've already risked sending your NC for passport why you want to do that again? You can easily do so when they open up in six months to a year go in person.

Unless you feel very adventurous and have an itch to juggle six knifes one fine day as show in TV with caption (Do not try this at home), go ahead and take your chances 😋

Hi all!

just a quick update, went to H&Rblock to do our taxes (married joint),  added our 1-year old daughter as a dependent and updated my info stating I’m a US citizen since June 2020.

The representative noted on return notes  that I was a citizen and that I could provide proof if needed.

is that a common thing for them to do? To add notes about your life events?

Now I have second thoughts about something going wrong because I haven’t updated my social yet due to covid.

The electronic return was accepted by IRS.

I had no problem with tax return last year listing me as citizen, ssn not updated.

I'll update my info with SSA once they agree to do it in-person. Until then, NOPE. Amazing how banks, USCIS, DMV etc can be open for in-person service but SSA cannot. Every single SSA I have been to before the pandemic also had glass/plastic screens between the employee and the "customer", so it's not like they need to fix their work places in order to allow in-person services, it's already done since many years.

It's also a giant "NOPE" for me too! Will ONLY update when they do IN-PERSON services. Given the fact that I almost had a heart attack because my Naturalization Certificate didn't show up until 5 weeks later after my passport arrival, plus there are a few others in this forum still painfully waiting for their passports and NCs, I've learned my lesson to NEVER risk sending any of my original citizenship documents by mail! Nope nope!

Is it true your signature on the passport application has to match the one in the naturalization certificate???

i kinda messed up my signature on my naturalization. I was too nervous to sign it. My last name starts with an H but on my signature looks more like Ll on my naturalization certificate. 😓

Deleted first response , misunderstood, sorry

I can’t see that it’s an issue - they can see from everything else that it’s  the same person, and who ever has perfectly duplicated signatures all the time anyway?

Lol, me too I semi-screwed up my signature. But I don't think that's a problem, as long as your signatures on different documents are alike (not completely different) you should be good.

I had to update mine due to name change and I need the update name in a license and couple other docs. I called my local SS office and was told to drop off all my documents at their office along with a prepaid envelop so that they can mail everything back to me.

Did you get them (the docs you dropped off) back already?

Do they ask citizenship status when filling tax? I don't recall seeing the question?
