Naturalized but forgot to update Social Security

Hi everyone, I became a naturalized citizen in October 2019, and I never realized I had to go into the Social Security office with my certificate to update my file. I’m now onboarding for a new job and was good my SSN isn’t verifying as a citizen, I explained the situation to the employer and they said it should be no problem, since my old LPR status is still active...should this even be an issue as long as I have my Naturalisation Certificate? No matter what that replaces the LPR status right? Of course I’ll be making an appointment to update my file ASAP, but I thought this was an interesting situation

You need to come in person at a SSA office to update it, at your convenience. You’re fine.

Thank you! I had a feeling it wasn’t a huge deal, but I wanted to make sure I was safe...the employer did say it shouldn’t be an issue, but when they started talking about how my LPR status is still valid I started to panic as obviously my card was taken when I got the certificate....but there’s no way I could have issues just based on the fact I haven’t updated my status at the SSA office right?

You no longer have LPR status as you are now a citizen.  Your Certificate of Naturalization serves as evidence that you have authorization to work, regardless of what your SSA card says.

 

As you already know, better to get the card updated to avoid hassles like what you experienced.  Also, get a US passport if you haven't already.  It serves as both evidence of identity and of work authorization, unlike the certificate of naturalization -- https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-acceptable-documents

Hi!!!! Congratulations on your citizenship. Were you able to update your status at the SSA during this pandemic? On June 2020 I became US citizen thank God!

 

I live in Houston TX and  I called several times to try to get an appointment  but they won’t give me an appt due to Covid19 and they only give appt regarding benefits or retirement but not for citizenship status updates 😪

 

The two times that I’ve called I was told by the customer representative at the SSA to mail my certificate but honestly I don’t feel comfortable doing that.

Hello! So I called the other day and I got the same story, they only give appointments to more important situations, and like you said, there's no way I'm mailing my certificate! I know it's not THAT important, so I think I'm just gonna hold off until this mess is over with
