OK, so my wife has her oath ceremony on Dec 2.  At which point she has to turn in her green card.  We wanted to take a trip out of the country on the Dec 28th. even if we submit for a passport and expedite it, we are not sure it would make it back to us on time.

Options

1.  Wait for US passport. If it doesn't arrive on time, have a family member Fedx it to us. Can she exit the US on here foreign passport?

2.  Purchase the tickets. then try to get an appointment at a passport center and get a passport within 2 to 3 days. I did this years ago when I needed a passport. had it the next day. but I'm sure covid has jacked that up as well. ( would have to use her foreign passport info to buy her ticket )

Anybody else ever been in this spot?

The problem is not exiting the country, but entry. If she doesn't have a US passport, how is she going to prove she is a US citizen?

It seems pretty risky to count that the passport will arrive (mail is usually slow during holidays and there are a number of non-working days) and, if it does arrive, you want someone to send it to you?

I don't know how long passports are taking now, so I cannot answer about that.

Exit will not be a problem. However, the agent at check in counter likely will ask for both passport. So, go to passport agency and get a US passport will be a better choice.

I got a passport in two days at a passport agency in a similar situation. My husband got one the next day. I would definitely not leave without the passport in hand, there's plenty of time to get it done at the agency if you're lucky enough to live near one.

Just sucks that you have to have the tickets purchased and you can only make the appointment 2 weeks befor you you fly. and your appointment date can only be three days before you fly.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just out of curiosity, can you go to any passport agency to apply expedited passport for those need to travel internationally for the next 72 hours regardless of your home address? Apparently, it is not all agencies would have open slot. I guess for those who indeed need to travel immediately, they would try any available slot in any close passport agency location, event cross state.

Also, you pick up your passport in person at agency counter, right?
