Any IR-5 Montreal here?

Hello all, newbie here.

I am petitioner for my parents and am tracking IR5 cases at Montreal. We submitted additional documents (second time around) on Nov 18th and I hope we will be DQ-ed soon. It is helpful to go through this process with others!

I do have a few questions

1) My parents do not have their vaccination records - should they ask their family doctor to do a blood work to establish vaccinations and get any if they are missing right now while we are just waiting around - or should we just wait to do this once we get the medical requests? They are currently in Ajax, ON.

2) It is common/advisable for parents to travel to 3rd country before crossing into US after approval? Parents live in 3 countries, they would like to go to 3rd country, wrap up and then fly into USA directly. I understand that medical needs to be valid at the time of border crossing.

Will appreciate any insights.

Thank you.

1. Your parents should do their blood work and get the appropriate boosters now while they’re waiting. If they need boosters, they have the choice now to space them apart as opposed to doing multiple on the same day.  There probably won’t be enough time to do them after they get their interview letter.

I've read on this thread that some parents were interviewed together? Was this Montreal?

My mom got her interview scheduled for March 2023, but my dad is behind by about a month (DQ date) and has not received an appointment yet.

Is it standard for parents to be interviewed separately?

hi,

I dont know whats the standard, but here is our experience.

My parents were DQed separately (NVC okayed one doc for mum but rejected it for dad so had to resubmit)

I guess that put them on separate tracks as they both got different ILs. Then the Montreal Embassy,  also approved my mum easily, yet asked my dad for original documents.

I assume if the parents file stayed together at the NVC level, then so does everything else that follows.

Now if your dad also happens to get an IL and your mum hasn't had her own interview yet, you can call the scheduling service to request an appointment together. We choose to go through with my mums as we did not have any clarity of my dads timeline.

hope this helps.

My parents were appeared for IR5 visa interview earlier this month at Montreal Consulate. The mom visa was approved and she received the passport with immigrant visa stamp after 2 days but my dad (Canadian citizen) was given 221g ( passport was returned) with the request to submit DS-5535 and resume that he did. He had to go through Administrative processing few years back when he applied for B1/B2 visa on the passport of his country of origin but was cleared after 30 days.

1. Would this make AP faster as he was cleared few years go?

Now a days AP takes more than 6 months in Montreal (WOM is the way out if you are stuck for more than 9 months). By that time my mom visa will be expired. She has a job in Canada and she does not want to leave job and immigrate to U.S without dad.

2. What are the options for her so that she can keep her visa/immigration status , living in Canada while waiting for dad AP to complete? Any advice?

What did you all end up doing? I'm getting nervous reading so many threads of parents not being processed together.... why can't they make this easier :(

Yes! Bring the original... we were so consumed with covid regulations that we did a quick check and for whatever reason thought we had the originals.  Literally had a facepalm moment when they were asked for the originals and my parents only had copies.  The officer was kind and just let them know that once we sent it back that they've get approved.  We had our visa issued last week! so we only had about a 2-week delay from the interview date.

The only questions they were asked is who sponsored them, what do they do, why are they going and where will they be living.

My parents answered:

- My daughter sponsored me

- She owns her own business and her husband is in the medical field (we told them our actual positions/company etc)

- We are moving because we want to retire in California to watch our grandkids grow up

- We will be living w/ our kids for the first little bit until we decide what we'd like to do

The officer actually lived by us when he lived in the US and was super nice and even asked if they tried to convince us to move back to Canada. All in all they said it was really easy, smooth and people were kind which was nice to hear considered such a tense year.

Hi there ! how did you manage to get it so the Montreal consulate interviewed your parents together ...etc? What originals were needed/any surprises? Sorry i realize this was awhile ago, but we are coming on our 1-year mark since i filed for mom and dad...thank you!

My mom ended up activating her visa and dad is still waiting. God knows how long we have to wait for reunion of whole family.

For the I-864...do you have any advice?? im not sure which i should proactively complete...

I-864 vs. I-864A and how many times to submit for your parents????

I am trying to be proactive with approval in the coming month and what i need to prepare for....

  • I applied for both of my parents I-130
  • My husband and I both work, but also have a child who is listed as a dependent

Am I anticipating correctly that I will be submitting the below forms?

  • x2 ---  I-864 Forms (1 for dad, 1 for mom)
  • x 2 --- I-864A Forms (on behalf of my husband, and 1 for dad and 1 for mom)
  • Since the other household member is a toddler, assuming no form on their behalf needs to be completed?

My income/family will cover the 125% min threshold they need show on the website for a household of 5 (i.e., 3 of us + my 2 parents). But should I still do a I-864A also for my parents showing they also have income due to retirement income?

  • My parents are retired, but what if they live off of investments / supplemental income?
  • Do I do a I-864A on behalf of one parent for the other parent?

You have to submit separate I-864 form for dad and mom. You may submit I-864A if your income alone is not sufficient (125% threshold) for family of 5.

You parent income will not count. Anything income or assets outside the U.S. will not count. Just submit what is needed otherwise NVC stage will take more time.

Thanks - I guess I read it as if you have a spouse that works they have to fill out the form too regardless of you having sufficient income personally

Can we only pay the NVC Fees (Affidavit + Immigration Visa App Fee) via bank account (i.e., no credit cards)? I hate giving out actual bank routing info via online forms/portals....
