https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/526324-north-dakota-records-worlds-highest-covid-19-mortality-rate

North Dakota’s coronavirus mortality rate is the highest of any U.S. state or country, according to an analysis of data from last week conducted by the Federation of American Scientists.

The analysis, first reported by HuffPost, shows that North Dakota has a rate of 18.2 deaths per 1 million people. South Dakota, meanwhile, has 17.4 deaths per million, the third-worst rate in the world. The states have a total population of under 2 million.

North Dakota: 749 deaths, 64,891 cases.. that's a death (mortality) rate of 1.15%.

New York: 33,540 deaths, 568,000 cases.. that's a death (mortality) rate of 5.9%

I'll go with fake news.

You usually do, but if you actually read the article, it is apparent they are discussing the current mortality rate.

South Dakota nurse says many dying patients still insist COVID-19 'not real'

https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/526204-south-dakota-nurse-says-many-dying-patients-still-insist-covid-19-not

A South Dakota emergency room nurse on Monday expressed frustration that many of her patients don't believe they are dying of COVID-19.

Jodi Doering's tweet went viral on social media over the weekend after she tweeted about patients who "don't believe the virus is real ... while gasping for breath on 100% Vapotherm."

"It wasn't one particular patient, it's just a culmination of so many people," Doering told CNN's "New Day." "And their last, dying words are, 'This can't be happening. It's not real.' "

You are conflating the case fatality rate and the mortality rate.

So cherry picking?  Belgium has the overall highest deaths per 1M at 1,259.

Pretty much everyone is since no one knows exactly how many people have actually been infected.  The actual mortality rate is probably much lower if the unidentified cases are factored in.  I tend to agree though, this is clickbait.

Did you not read the article either? Belgium is 4th on the chart for the period they were looking at.

No, I did not read the article after seeing the clickbait headline.  Looking at a specific period during a pandemic seems a little off, they should look at the entirety of the pandemic.

Unless you are still living in April, what is the point of looking at the entirety. It's not a historical assessment. It's looking at where the outbreak is worst right now. If Belgium has surged ahead, we don't need to split hairs. It is not a contest. The point is (or should be) there is no reason for ND and SD to be in this mess. They are a rural states with low population densities. They allowed things to get out of control with some needlessly stupid policies and actions. There are a quarter of a million cases linked to a stupid motorcycle rally. I feel sorry for the people who tried, but there were not enough of them, and not much leadership.

Back when we came out of the first lock down, people were given greater personal responsibility for how they approach the pandemic. Unfortunate display of how lacking that sense of responsibility is in some.

If you look at the last five days in ND, the numbers have come down significantly.  The other thing we don't know is are these current deaths, or deaths that occurred days or weeks ago that are just now being counted (we see this in MI quite often and usually is what attributes to the spikes in deaths).  ND had a pretty large spike in the period reviewed, but we need more information before the alarm bells are sounded.

Logic dictates that specific state was picked at that specific time for a very specific reason using a specific nonsensical scale. Can't imagine what it might be. p1026Ea.gif
