But what are we supposed to do here, pretend our numbers aren't going up? Just tell everyone to rip off their masks and breathe free and party on, dude? I follow the science -- the science says masks work (yes, they do, and now there is research saying they protect the wearer, too), social distancing works, hygiene works. I do these things, my family does these things. We feel an obligation to care for each other as we do ourselves. We feel an obligation to care for our neighbors, too. Maybe it's just the way I was brought up, but I was taught to care for my neighbors as I would myself. I would LOVE to have my big reception and dance and sing and get drunk and hug everyone. I'd love that to happen ASAP. But ASAP is not now. I have self-control. Apparently plenty of people around me don't.

I still have questions about the numbers and the tests.  I heard on A&G that Elon M. had four test administered by the same person using the same machine and two were positive and two negative, does that get counted as two positive cases in the numbers?  There was another one I heard about where the nasal swab test was administered to someone in both nostrils and  one was positive and one negative, how does that work.  I am not contesting that numbers are going up, but so far deaths have not followed and have been averaging the same since March/April.

deaths are lagging indicator, i saw they are relatively flat for now, but i am waiting a few weeks to see if they rise. i would be very concerned if they are rising and hospitals are getting more packed, especially the smaller rural places that dont have enough space that they are sending people further and further away.

 

our hospitals here are already taking people from El Paso. and even though this place has a lot of hospitals due to university and research, it would be untenable for us to keep taking more people if we got a spike. fortunately we have a good mayor who seems to be on top of things and is doing his best to keep it from getting too bad, regardless of what the governor thinks, and without any sort of huge shutdowns. as with anything, this could change, but we are not in a bad spot for now.

Yes they are, but for some reason the spike in cases in mid-July barely blipped relative to deaths as compared to March/April.  As to the hospitals, you also have to look at other factors such as how many people in the ICUs are Covid patients vs in there for other issues.  In MI, the general figure is about 20% currently, but that is a rough average, I am sure there are higher or lower figures from hospital to hospital.

not only that, but also how many people cant get into the icu because its full of covid patients. its a nasty side effect of people getting sick and taking up available space and i am not sure its being tracked

  Everything is monitored, but how well it's going to hold up remains to be seen. We have had to come up with several contingency plans. The worst is converting all area hospitals into Covid only facilities and triaging all non-Covid patients to the temporary facilities. That will be very risky for people with severe health issues that would be better served by a real ICU, but if we get to that point, it's probably going to be a lot of unnecessary deaths either way.

my best friend lived in OC until last month, he always masked up but ended up catching the covid from people who didn't. he is immunocompromised, and he was crazy sick. took him about 6 weeks just to start feeling human again. doctors gave him all kinds of stuff but couldnt admit him, not sure why, from what he told me they were at capacity or near it or something like that. the doctor told him go home and rest and try not to die. i had to basically talk to him every day to help keep him going and telling him that what he was going through was exactly what i went through, just not as severe as his. he is much better now, so yeah i know how bad it was in CA. he moved right before the area he was in got told to evac because of the wildfires..... i told him it was a sign to get the hell out of dodge lol
