Hi everyone, I just have a general question. My wife was recently approved for her conditional permanent residency, she should get her green card within 3 weeks. When she flies outside the country, would she need to show her green card at the airport? Do they usually ask for that, or just the passport? Thanks

Just passport to leave the country, and green card to present to the POE when returning to the country.

Keep in mind when visiting other countries a visa may be needed even though US Citizens may be able to visit on a visa waiver.

Well there are two issues here. Firstly, she will of course need to show her Green Card when re-entering the USA.

Secondly, often when you get to the ticket counter in the USA airport and hold a return ticket, they will ask you for proof that you are legally allowed to return to the USA on this return ticket. Usually at this point I would say "I have a Green Card", and the ticket agent would either ask to see it or take it on trust. I don't know the consequences of not having any proof at this point.

Also you are usually asked for your Green Card at the ticket counter when flying back to the USA, at least the 2 times I've done it they have asked for my Green Card at the check in desk. Of course you have to have it on you at this time, because you're going to need it to re-enter the USA.

Just passport to leave the country, and green card to present to the POE when returning to the country.

Perhaps you shouldn't answer this question until you've actually got experience with it?

Not to mention you are REQUIRED to carry it on you by law. ;)

Why would you even think of not bringing it to the airport, ESPECIALLY when leaving the country?

Indeed. I'm curious as to what the intent behind this question is? The only scenario I can imagine is that the person travels before the GC has arrived in the mail, then the spouse mails it to them while they are abroad, and they use it to return.

I would strongly suggest not to do that, if that is what the OP is thinking. Forgive me for speculating here.
