One thing to keep in mind is that all the coast in the Gulf of Mexico + going up to about Virginia is often in the path of hurricanes...

But I guess it's the price to pay for warmer weather.

Don't go too far South or else it gets way too humid.

My favourite states are GA and TX (I didn't live on the coast of either, only inland).

TX has no state income taxes, but sales taxes of 8.25% may bite somewhat.

TN ranks a little lower due to its higher (9.25%) sales-tax, though (like TX) no state income tax.

Also, AL, SC and NC may be nice.

Maine is gorgeous, I love it here.

That being said, the tax burden is horrendous, the cost of living is high, and you've got to be OK with shoveling snow in the wintertime (which lasts a while). Spring doesn't really happen, but Autumn is wonderful. At the moment it's a little hot and humid for my taste (93 in downtown Portland yesterday), but if you don't mind that you're all set. There's also a huge difference between the "haves" and the "have-nots" - Aroostook County is like a different world. Lots of tourists and second-home owners out on the coast. Check out the job scene too - my hubby in IT works in NH because there are just not the jobs in ME.

NH is also nice; although they have no state income or sales taxes, the property taxes will empty your wallet quickly.

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.

Texas is cool. Only problem is all those Texans.

yeah, big problem with those texans...they go to other countries and make you fall in love with them by being the sweetest guy you ever met...just terrible! :P

oh, and the living expense seems reasonable and the job market is doing well too. and people wave at you in the street :)

Omg. Sweetest post ever ;-)

I do like Alabama, especially around Mobile. But I'm a New Orleans girl, myself. Now, the thing is that now, since Katrina, housing prices are out of control and the cost of living is in no way comparable to the pay (according to my family still there).

Oh, one more plug for Washington...no state income tax.

montana is beautiful no sales tax good wages ,idaho also in the north and washington too very nice and also close to canada. yippee 4 more days till i move to my new home in IDAHO.

Oooh, northern Idaho is gorgeous!

Of all the states that I have lived in, I do prefer Florida. I was living in Bradenton just off of Sarasota Bay and it was beautiful and inexpensive compared to what I was paying in California. Now I am back in Southern California due to a family death and I realize that I did not miss it.

If circumstances were different and had the choice to live in the states, it would be Florida. I do miss living abroad though..............I intend on moving back to Thailand in 5 years, that is the plan my fiancée and I have for now.

definitely stay away from california like others have said. expensive, high taxes, horrible traffic, hot weather most of the time, ugly smog in a lot of places, oh i could go on forever! but it also has some great things about it.the most beautiful beaches!

i'm definitely thinking of checking out washington state sometime in the future. sounds very promising and is much, MUCH cheaper than the other places i've lived. (ca and ny)
