Hello,

my husband has lost his job due to covid. I am a stay at home parent so we’re struggling and living off savings. Will this hurt us when he finally gets his interview? We’re worried about applying for social welfare if the officer will ask and then deny my husband for it. Anyone have experience or knowledge?

You'll need a joint sponsor

Thank you, yes, my dad is our joint sponsor. Would that make it ok for us to collect social welfare?

The immigrant can’t receive public benefits- you and your father signed a contract with the US government... that if he becomes a public charge you are liable for paying back the benefits..

Retail stores are hiring for the holidays along with amazon, fed ex, ups, etc have either of you looked at these places?

Best solution is a joint sponsor and husband find a job as soon as possible

You guys don't need jobs right now since you're doing the IR1/CR1 process.  I assume you live in Ireland with your spouse?

We are still in Ireland awaiting the reopening of the US embassy so my husband can have his interview. We’d be receiving social welfare in Ireland, not the US. He already has a job lined up in the states.

My step dad is our joint sponsor. We are still in Ireland on a level 5 lockdown so the embassy is closed, no interviews until they reopen.

I hope not... USA or any other country shouldnt be responsible for every immigrant fiscally... his own motherland should worry about him.

I’m not understanding your comment. We are currently in his “motherland” and might have to get social welfare from his “motherland” due to a level 5 lockdown. We are not yet in the US and won’t be seeking social welfare in the US as he already has a job lined up there.

No I mean domicile for you so he can get the visa eventually. You guys can use welfare in Ireland. It won’t affect his visa.

If your husband is the beneficiary, being unemployed or receiving public benefits from a foreign government will not negatively affect his chances of getting a spouse visa.  The US government only cares about how the petitioner will financially support the immigrant after moving to the US.  Having a well-qualified joint sponsor like you do is one way to address that concern.  No need to worry.
