I left the Philippines for work emergency at our Malaysia office with a passport expiring in less than 6 months and was questioned by the airline. However, I showed them a printout of my DFA renewal schedule and was allowed onboard. I am not sure if she could do that. As these are not normal times, maybe you could clarify with the airline? Have a passport renewal scheduled here in the US and print it out as proof that she will have it renewed when she comes back here?

The US government requires only her green card.

Whether an airline boards her or not is up to the airline. I can count on one hand with fingers left over the number of times an airline let me board after just presenting my green card (both times as experiments - I needed my passport in one case anyway because the country I was exiting had passport control on exit).

Doesn't the Philippines have passport control on exit? I don't recall for sure, but I tend to remember the countries that don't have passport control on exit and so far it is just Canada, UK, US. So even if the airline lets her board, the Philippines immigration authority might not.

I'm really not sure but I think they do.

Yes, the Philippines has outgoing Immigration Control and they like to look at everything. Especially for departing citizens of their own country.

Thank you all for your responses.  I also checked with the Border Patrol up here where I live (10 miles from Canada) and they said that technically she should only have to present her green card.  However, as one responder said, it's unlikely they would let her board a plane in the Philippines with expired passport.  My wife talked to a contact in the Philippine DFA and was told that she could board but it was up to the airline too.

Anyway, this same girl told my wife to simply renew but my wife told her she was still in a mandatory quarantine inin Bohol and it was going to set her back on the expiration date because the appointment system and transportation systems are only working on reduced schedules. The girl told her they would automatically extend her passport right then until Dec. 23rd for her because of the quarantine she was in.  This will likely give her ample time to get to Dumageute to get it taken care of - albeit facing an additional quarantine but this time in Panglao and will only be until her test result comes back in 4-7 days.  Quite a difference in times between them.  Problem is, the sea craft going to Dumageute only has one trip back and forth between Dumageute and Tagbilaran city.  She will have to stay over one night.  Not a big deal though, but if she had gone from seacraft,, direct to her appointment, and back to the sea craft for return, she wouldn't have to quarantine at all. This is of course impossible to do.  But in Panglao she can stay in a hotel for a few days and be out in 4-7 days and head back home to Catigbian.  That's way better than the school classroom she was in for the last 2 weeks. Yuk!

It's been an awful trip for her and she never made it in time to speak with her mom before she died.  So sad, and all because of Covid.  This is why it's so important to do the right things to prevent the spread.  It may well effect someone you don't even know.

@dvensel1 I had to book my own passport renewal appointment today, and remembered you and your wife's story.

Hopefully she has been able to sort things out after her mom's passing. And that she's been able to book a passport renewal appointment, too.

This isn't very good news, but at the office I booked at (DFA NCR East in Megamall), the earliest available appointments are now in Feb 2021. Hopefully the provincial office closest to your wife has much earlier slots open.
