COVID-19 anxiety syndrome: A pandemic phenomenon?

Yet, for some, going back out and mixing with other people is a concept filled with fear and anxiety. Despite vaccines and a decrease in disease prevalence, some

people experience what scientists call COVID-19 anxiety syndrome.

Symptoms of this syndrome mimic those of other mental health conditions, including anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and obsessive-compulsive

disorder (OCD). And, the pandemic and related factors appear to be the cause.

In a paper that appears in Psychiatry ResearchTrusted Source in October 2020, Profs Nikčević and Spada outline the characteristics of COVID-19 anxiety syndrome,

naming avoidance, compulsive symptom-checking, worrying, and threat monitoring (combined).

This syndrome manifests as the inability to leave the house because of COVID-19 fears, frequent checking for symptoms despite not being in a high-risk scenario,

and avoiding social situations or people.  Investigators note that people with this syndrome tend to experience increased post-traumatic stress, general stress,

anxiety, health anxiety, and suicidal ideation.

Wow.  Went shopping yesterday to Walmart and Costco without wearing a mask.  First time doing that for well over a year.

Felt kind of strange.  Still seems like at least half the people here are wearing them.

No masks required in Brewery , did feel odd seeing faces I had not seen for a year, and they had new staff in that period so a first there.

Walmart and Target were extremely fast in eliminating the mask mandate here.  I have made a couple trips already with my naked face.

I have been going into businesses for over two months now without a mask on, and only one time did anyone say anything about it. (If I really needed to be there, I kept a mask in my pocket.)  Two weeks ago, I was grocery shopping, and a security guard in the store (the ONLY store in the area that has one, and I have never understood that) told me I had to wear a mask.  I needed that store that particular day, so I complied for the last time.  (which saddened me considerably, as they have the best meat selection in town)

As I was checking out, I walked over to the security guard and asked him what he would have done had I not complied.  He gave me the party line about "private business, and we must respect their rules".  I said, no, actually I do not have to comply with their rules, I can do my shopping elsewhere.  So we summoned the store manager, and I explained to him what had happened.  He sided with the security guard, as I knew would happen, but then he got a little bit antsy when I said, "Look, I know both of you are just doing what you are told.  However, the mask mandate was just lifted the other day, and the freedoms that make this country great allow me to make a choice about where I shop, and why.  So I will no longer be shopping in this store as long as your owner sees fit to put unnecessary restrictions on us.  I will buy my groceries elsewhere.  Thank you for listening to my complaint."

The next day, I went so far as to call the store and ask to speak to a manager.  Got a lady this time, and when I started to explain what happened yesterday with the security guard, she said, "Sir, the issue has been resolved.  The owner told us this morning that masks are optional for all customers.  We hope this will make your shopping experience more enjoyable."  I assured her it would, and that I would be returning to the store soon.

Was in a nursery today that still had a mask required sign at the entrance.  I estimated about 10% of the customers actually wearing masks, and most of the employees with masks down around their chins.

Had a real cluster...disaster today.  For the past three weeks we have had company, my wife's friends from Russia.  Today was the day for them to return home (hooray).  In preparation for their trip, they had to get a negative PCR COVID test within 72 hours of their departure.  They did that on Thursday and the results were posted to the "portal" this morning.  We were able to access the results for one of them, but got locked out of the other result.  Apparently the Hispanic women with difficulties understanding English and taking down the info at the testing facility was having a real problem inputting the names and birthdates, and thus we were not able to access the second result.  The testing facility was closed for the weekend so, out of luck.  In a panic we took that person to an open clinic to get a rapid COVID test.

Drove the 125 miles to the Miami airport and waited in line to learn that Turkish airlines would not accept the rapid test.  The wife flew home but the husband is still here.  We did find another testing facility at the Miami airport, but not until it was too late.

Tomorrow my wife is going to have to make the 250 mile round trip as I told her I'm not doing that again.  She's not real happy, but she was the one in charge of setting up the testing.

I ran into my dentist this week. I am a patient of nearly 20 years and have spent many 10s of 1000s with him thru the years. He was in our business making a large purchase from another salesperson he has never met.

He might be my former dentist. He mentioned me to the other guy when I walked past.

Intelligence on Sick Staff at Wuhan Lab Fuels Debate On Covid-19 Origin

WASHINGTON—Three researchers from China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology became sick enough in November 2019 that they sought hospital care, according to a previously undisclosed U.S. intelligence report that could add weight to growing calls for a fuller probe of whether the Covid-19 virus may have escaped from the laboratory.

The details of the reporting go beyond a State Department fact sheet, issued during the final days of the Trump administration, which said that several researchers at the lab, a center for the study of coronaviruses and other pathogens, became sick in autumn 2019 “with symptoms consistent with both Covid-19 and common seasonal illness.”

The disclosure of the number of researchers, the timing of their illnesses and their hospital visits come on the eve of a meeting of the World Health Organization’s decision-making body, which is expected to discuss the next phase of an investigation into Covid-19’s origins.

Been in that bar many times.  First of all, it is a relatively small basement bar with very low ceilings and very poor ventilation, it is very popular with the students at Michigan State University, and can be very noisy.  It has been several years since I have visited it, and back then smoking was allowed, so the atmosphere was quite toxic.

Reference for those interested.  The comments are great, over the past 5-6 months, the number of people defending her in the comments section has declines noticeably.
