John Hopkins Doctor Thinks COVID Will Be Largely Gone By April, Half of U.S. Has Herd Immunity

Dr. Marty Makary, a surgeon and a professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health, believes that the coronavirus will be "mostly gone" by April.

In an op-ed published by The Wall Street Journal on Friday, Makary argued that half of the U.S. has already reached herd immunity because there are more coronavirus cases in the country, possibly 6.5 times as many, than the 28 million that have been reported.

Combined with the 15 percent of Americans who have already begun receiving the vaccine, the doctor argued that normal life will return by the spring.

Not really hearing the same thing from others.

Seems overly optimistic. I was hoping we would see transmission decrease over the summer again, and combined with increasing vaccination rates, maybe things would look better in the fall. With all the mutated strains taking off now, it's harder to say. We may be looking at another round of vaccinations after these first ones are done.

I don't disagree, it does seem quite optimistic, but what is causing the numbers to plummet so much?  I don't think it is all about masks or lockdowns.  There is a good study showing the comparison of CA and FL with to very different approaches with very similar results.  On the other hand, I believe Dr. Fauci is saying we will be masked up until 2022 which seems overly pessimistic to me?

If doctor Makary is correct, it could suggest more people have been previously infected or have preexisting immunity than was previously thought. Several possible reasons for that including cross reactivity with other coronaviruses, higher numbers of asymptomatic infections, or even the possibility that Covid-19 isn't as "new" as they thought it was. Could also be that vaccination of people in high risk areas is having a greater effect on reducing spread than the number of vaccinations alone would dictate. All speculation on my part, I guess, but April is not that far off, so we will soon see. I still tend to think we are looking at the end of this year at least.

I can tell you that things seem to be returning to "normal" in many parts of FL.  We have been down in the Keys for an extended weekend with some of our friends.  Last night, Sunday night, we went into Key West to have a nice dinner at the Conch Republic restaurant.  We figured a Sunday night would be good and not too busy.  Wrong.  When we arrived the restaurant was full and the bar was packed.  45 minute wait.

Decided to walk down to Duval St and see what else we could come up with.  Noticed Sloppy Joe's was full and people were waiting to get in.  Ended up at the Hard Rock as we could sit outside and did not have to wait.  We had our masks on, but we were in the minority.

Good to see business coming back.

Yeah, we were down in the Venice area back in late January, things were pretty normal in our opinion.  Sure we saw masks, etc., but the restaurants were fairly full.

Fauci’s mixed messages, inconsistencies about COVID-19 masks, vaccines and reopenings come under scrutiny

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Director Anthony Fauci's often inconsistent comments and mixed messages on the coronavirus pandemic are prompting renewed scrutiny as debate rages over reopening schools and businesses nearly a year after the lockdowns started.

"Dr. Fauci is a very good public-health official. His job is to advise policy makers and inform the public," Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said on Tuesday. "But his job is NOT to decide what we can do, where we can go or which places can open or close And his job is NOT to mislead or scare us into doing the 'right things.'"

"Why should we trust Fauci with a national plan? Back in March, Fauci famously told Americans, 'There’s no reason to be walking around with a mask,'" wrote David Harsanyi in the National Review. "(Fauci now says we should wear two masks. No thanks, Dad.)"

Fauci should be scrutinized, just because everyone should, but Rubio and Harsanyi are not the people to do it. They have there own inherent bias and they are about as far as anyone could get from being knowledgeable in the field. If someone wants to challenge Fauci's take, they should at least have a modicum of experience and credibility in virology or infectious diseases.

Anytime Fauci is scrutinized we get the message from the MSM that essentially says he knows what he is doing, or sometimes (at least last year), he is bowing to the pressure from Trump.  The article I posted above challenges Fauci from an author with much better medical credentials than Rubio et. al., but of course that is overly optimistic.  The simple fact is Fauci is also playing politics with his pronouncements and not giving us only the science, hence the criticism from those versed in politics.

Attended a great webinar last night given by one of the top notch Covid experts from Harvard medical school.   Learned a great deal.

Happy that I got the Pfizer injection.  My second comes a week from Saturday.

Watching to see what happens with Novavax.  Some very interesting technology.

Big difference Pfizer/ Moderna and J&J vaccines.  Tech wise and efficacy.  Pfizer/Moderna are at about 95% efficacy measured for symptomatic illness.  J&J efficacy varies with age and not nearly as good for those over 60, AND measured as preventing moderate to severe illness.  In other words you might still get sick but are not likely to end up in the hospital or dying.  Better than nothing however.

If at first you don't succeed, then sky diving is not for you.
