Interesting how that happens.

So tax the rich?  That always works.

What is your solution? Tax cuts for the wealthiest hasn't done anything for the lower 90,%

Smaller government and flat tax including investment income.

Have they ever paid less at any point in time and had as many tax loopholes to take advantage of as they do today?

Just curious, has anyone's foreign spouse traveled back to their home country for the main purpose to visit family, despite the pandemic going on?

Or is everyone respecting quarantine procedures and staying put?

We went back to Canada to take care of family. We did a mandatory 14 day quarantine in place including grocery delivery before seeing anyone. We did another 7 days without contact when returning home, despite no request or requirements from our federal government.

Ah ok.  If you don't mind me asking, was it out of business or leisure? August last year I had to travel back to Japan to help move my family from the military base, quarantined for 2 weeks.  Once back in the U.S. had to quarantine again for another 2 weeks prior to returning to my command.

My husband is in the UK right now. He got there on the 16th and did the new quarantine rules, which allow a person travelling in from a country not in the travel corridor list (i.e. safe to come from without quarantining) to isolate for five days then take a test. The tests generally aren't cheap (his cost about £300) but he really, really wanted to see his daughter for Xmas.  The other option is to wait two weeks in self-isolation, but he couldn't hack it, so he paid the money. He was able to self-isolate at a family member's home, they brought him meals and set him up with an Xbox and a workspace so he was happy enough, and he was able to talk to them while staying in his room and just having the door open. We were not counting on Tier 4 restrictions being imposed on London when he got there, and we were very worried he wouldn't be able to travel out of London to see his daughter in the southwest of England. However his travel was classified as being essential because he was a non-custodial parent going to see his child. He's back in London today, complying with the Tier 4 rules and staying on his own in his friend's empty flat until he comes back at the end of this week.

Of course he also has to take a COVID test over there again before he leaves to be able to get back into the US. More money to spend. At least he has a place to stay if he gets a positive result.

When he gets back, he must quarantine for 10 days because of county rules. That's a new requirement -- anyone coming into the county has to quarantine now. He is supposed to self-isolate here from me, but I just don't know if we can live with that. I have been so, so careful for months now, but the thought of welcoming him home and shunting him into a room and not being next to him is not realistic. I think I would rather do self-isolation with him and not leave the home for 10 days. We'd been planning on him testing a few days after he got back anyway. I guess we'll figure it out as we go along. We have been careful and cautious. I think staying indoors with him is the only way to thread the needle here.

It's been a lot of stress for me because I have felt so far away. He is SO happy he did it, but I will be honest: I've been miserable and scared. He doesn't know this (yet) because I didn't want to spoil his trip. He went from one of the global hot spots (LA County) to the place where the new fast-spreading variant cropped up. Yes, he spent far longer out in the middle of Bumblefudge, England where there's barely anyone about anyway, but it's scary to think of the person you love getting sick and being without you.

We did help my in-laws with some important issues that were difficult to navigate remotely but we did (quietly) attend her son's wedding which was a party of 8. At the time cases in BC were waning and we were very cautious outside if the wedding.  Based on the increase in cases, I don't think that we would do that today.

Trickle down or letting the state control everything.  Which one is better?

Those that enjoy one extreme always deflect that the only alternative is another opposite extreme. I never suggested either were better.

Not really sure "trickle down" is an extreme economic platform.

I heard this morning. It may not affect him at all because (from what I gather) since London's already in Tier 4, and traveling for work is permissible under those rules. If they close the borders... another story. He has a place to stay for as long as he needs, which is good. I'll be watching at noon my time.
