Texas Hospitals Are Already Overloaded. Doctors Are ‘Frightened by What Is Coming.’

SAN ANTONIO — At least two hospitals in Houston have been so overwhelmed with coronavirus patients this week that officials erected overflow tents outside. In Austin, hospitals were nearly out of beds in their intensive care units. And in San Antonio, a spike in virus cases reached alarming levels not seen in months, with children as young as 2 months old tethered to supplemental oxygen.

Across Texas, health officials warned of overloaded, strained hospitals, a growing crisis not seen since early February, when a late winter wave deluged the state’s health care system. More than 10,000 Texans have been hospitalized this week and at least 53 hospitals were at maximum capacity in their intensive care units.

“If this continues, and I have no reason to believe that it will not, there is no way my hospital is going to be able to handle this. There is no way the region is going to be able to handle this,” Dr. Esmaeil Porsa, a top health official in Harris County, which includes Houston, told state legislators on Tuesday. “I am one of those people that always sees the glass half-full, I always see the silver lining. But I am frightened by what is coming.”

In recent days, Texas has averaged about 12,400 new cases a day, nearly double the number seen just two weeks ago, according to a New York Times database. The spike comes as about one in five U.S. hospitals with intensive care units, or 583 total hospitals, recently reported that at least 95 percent of their I.C.U. beds were full. One worry about the highly contagious Delta variant, which has fueled surges across the country, is whether it might test the capacity of health systems.

Regurgitating the same propaganda from last year. The hospitals were so overwhelmed then that here in Wisconsin they spent millions of dollars on an emergency hospital on the state fair grounds that might have seen 5 patients. The navy hospital ship that was in NY didn't see a single covid patient. The hospitals are not overwhelmed. They never were. I went to my local hospital yesterday (where by the way they too are claiming they are overwhelmed) for an unrelated reason and guess what. There was barely anyone there and I was seen right away. Can't the covid fear mongers at least come up with new propaganda?

I'm glad Moderna seems to be holding firm, even though it has dropped some against Delta. The rumblings about reduced effectiveness has been going on for a while from the Israeli studies, and the latest study looks solid but has yet to be peer reviewed. Some epidemiologists have urged caution as still more data needs gathering. The way I have still always seen it, is that the vaccine's main goal is to reduce transmission, and if transmitted, to lessen the effects. The ultimate concern for me though, is what are the long term effects of breakthrough infections on the body (LongCovid, brain and organ damage). When I had the choice of vaccine, I weighed which one might be the best for me. The trade off with Moderna seemed to be stronger on dosage so potential side effects vs Pfizer which seemed to take a moderate approach. A lot of people I know with Moderna got the 'COVID-arm', and I am terrible when it comes to hives. Pfizer is what I went with for that reason. If it means an additional dose in the future that's fine with me and I haven't changed my protective habits. I have seen many reports of immuno-compromised individuals getting immunity tests after the vaccine and finding it having no effect.

Today the state has surpassed all previous highs in Mississippians hospitalized for COVID-19. No intensive care beds remain in the state, and hospitals are operating at emergency capacity to cope with the incoming flood of COVID-19 patients (including the the University of Mississippi Medical Center, which Is converting a parking garage to patient care).

Of the nearly 1,500 now in the hospital for COVID-19, more than 1,300 are unvaccinated. It's an extraordinary burden.

Hearing Mississippi's health system is near a state of collapse. They are asking for the Comfort to be utilized. Things are really bad... :(

Doesn't help that they are short 1500 nurses too.  Bad situation to be in all around.  1 in 5 nurses have quit, I read.  They are exhausted.

The numbers ARE a bit misleading, or at least hard to understand.  MS has 901 ICU beds.  They have 388 covid ICU beds in use.  Yet the article says only 6 open ICU beds (other news outlets report they are at 90% + capacity).  Something isn't adding up.

Do Masks Work?  A Review of the Evidence

Jeffrey H. Anderson - August 11, 2021

[...] Since we are constantly told that the CDC and other public-health entities are basing their recommendations on science, it's crucial to know what, specifically, has been found in various medical studies.  Significant choices about how our republic should function cannot be made on the basis of science alone—they require judgment and the weighing of countless considerations—but they must be informed by knowledge of it.  [...]
