My husband and I have to get a ticket for him from Nairobi to Detroit, should he be coming in to Detroit or in somewhere else and what about layovers, what's the best way? And what airline should we go through?

He can enter at any US airport and then connect further to Detroit.  I am not aware of anything direct to Detroit that does not go through Europe, but if you want to come into Detroit as the initial POE, you might look for Paris, Amsterdam or London.  I do not know what the current COVID restrictions are doing as to travel from Europe, but as a spouse, if there are flights available, he should be fine.  On a side note, back when my then fiancé came here, it was nice to have the POE Detroit, but it is not required.

Good Luck!

Note, if you are looking to come directly into Detroit, try Delta, KLM, or Air France.

Thanks for all the info. Yes we would like him to come in directly with no layovers. That was a nightmare for me when I went to see him. I don't want him to have to deal with that. I see a lot through KLM for sure. Thanks

I discussed this with my co-worker who is from Kenya, and this was his recommendation.

Nairobi – New York – Detroit (there is 1 flight a day) - recommended

Nairobi – Europe – Detroit (multiple flights)

Europe could be KLM via Amsterdam, Lufthansa via Frankfurt, Swiss Air via Zurich or British Airways vis London – any one of these are shortest and most direct

Ethiopian Airlines Nairobi – Addis Ababa – Chicago – Detroit

Turkish Airlines Nairobi – Istanbul – New York - Detroit

I would also think Nairobi direct to NY then domestic transfer to Detroit is best option. He would clear customs and immigration at NY (JFK I presume?) so ensure he has enough time for that, especially if he has to change terminals to transfer.  If you’re going to have to layover somewhere, which he is, I think it’s better to do that in the US than Europe. Any possible issues, from flight delays leading to changed flights to anything else, are just easier sorted out from the US imo. (And the last thing you want to add to stress is some overzealous airline agent trying to prevent him boarding in Europe because they don’t understand how an IR visa itself is proof of a travel ban exemption. Have seen reports of similar.)
