Are employment letters supposed to be standardized?

My boss wrote a formal letter explaining my employment, printed it out on our company letterhead, and signed it. After reading through here though, it seems like a lot of people got their employment letters from their HR department. Am I supposed to request some kind of standardized employment letter, is that what USCIS is specifically looking for? If I submit what my boss gave me with the I-864, will it be rejected by USCIS?

As an FYI, the letter my boss wrote is very simple and straightforward and contains how long I've been working here, my full time status, my salary, my raises and promotions over the past 5 years, and that I am in good standing and will continue to be employed here indefinitely. She also used this letter to explain why my W-2s have the corporate address and old company name instead of the actual current address and name (only a small change in name, so it's still obviously the same company).

Thanks in advance for any advice!

This will work just fine, as some smaller companies and such don't even have HR departments. The main things it has to contain are your salary, length of employment, and your job title. Good luck!

My wife has been back since June 5, 2007. Now we're just livin' man, L I V I N :)

Jup1ter,

What the USCIS is specifically looking for is stated in the I-864 instructions. What the USCIS will accept is what your company is willing to write.

The guides have many tips for affidavit of support, among the tips is a suggested list of things that may be on that letter, I just printed off the list of things, and gave it to my boss, she just followed the suggestion and made me the employment letter.

"Basically, your employer letter should state "To whom it may concern: (first name, last name) has been employed

full-time with the XYZ Company since 200_ as a (name of your job), and is an employee in good standing with an

annual salary of $XXXX. Signed, John Doe, Supervisor (or whatever title)" The letter should be on company

letterhead." (from link provided by YuAndDan)

That is exactly what I gave to my boss as a guideline for writing the letter. So I guess I'm okay with a letter from her instead of HR.

Thanks everyone!
