I have to say this from the perspective of someone with very different views than R's and D's, even though I'm pleased with the outcome somewhat. I live in a heavy red town. The R's here are some of the absolute worst in the state, really just awful and corrupt.. and that is why this town can often be a disgraceful and violent place. The D's that ran this time around (usually the R's are unopposed) knew they had no chance. Older fellow, really nice dude, no political experience but a hardworking guy. He'd stand on the corner in town almost every weekend and be spat on and have trash tossed at him.. he knew he had no chance.And he was right, but it was a surprisingly good showing that I can recall ever. I remember back when, there was hardly any outreach in this town when Hillary was running, but Biden actually managed to snag a nice spot for a campaign building (oh there were threats all the time!).. and eventually during these last few months some of the constant Trump signs I remember were actually switching to Biden. Don't get me wrong, the majority are all Trumpy here for economy reasons only and those that aren't are a little too afraid to speak up. And then there are the crazies. We often have weekend "convoys" of guys erratically driving their mega-trucks wildly waving guns in the air (there was one today running people off the road..)... and it makes a lot of people really alarmed. There were a lot of angry Republicans in this town that are fed up with Trump..and if they aren't fed up with Trump, they are fed up with the obnoxious indecent behavior of some of his supporters just as much as they don't like BLM rioters. 

 

In 2016, Trump only got about 1,000 votes. Hardly anyone voted that year, but he still carried the county. Hillary got a few hundred. This year there was thousands for Biden. I know there's not THAT many D's in this town, so I know it's R's that also contributed. The demographics really haven't changed that much here, but people are really just exhausted from it all and want it to be over.

     Trump has already suggested he may run again in 2024. He will continue to have enough support that a lot of Republican politicians will be wary of doing anything that would upset his base. He will still have a lot of influence over the direction the Republican party takes. Trump is like any other cancer. It's not enough to get rid of him. People also need to make sure he doesn't come back.

A lot can happen in four years though. There are potential liabilities he may face out of office and other issues too. But yes, I agree. That's likely the plan, him or one of his various surrogates. Complacency is what caused this predicament in the first place, so one would be wise to not get cocky. I don't see Biden going another four.
