My Japanese wife has informed me that she can easily get my (USC) name added to her passport in parentheses. She says that she read that she can then keep using her Japanese name legally, and get her Green Card and SSN in my name in the US. Can anybody confirm this? Do I just need to add my family name as "other names used" on the I-130 and all the other forms? Will this cause any difficulty when I file my petition at the Tokyo Embassy? If she has my family name put in parentheses on her passport, what name should we use when it asks for her legal name? Should I call the municipal office in Japan to see in they can change the name on the marriage certificate (it now only has her maiden name listed)? I'm going to Tokyo to give them the I-130 next week, so any information would be greatly appreciated.

Do it the other way, Maiden name as "other names used" and file using married name, this will generate SSN and Green Card in the name that you say she wants. The Visa will be in married name, but this is OK with the maiden name in the passport.

If you wanted to change the name on the green card later, you would file form I-90 and pay an extra fee of $200, or $370 after July 29. So it is best to do the I-130 in the name that you want the green card issued in.

That's exactly what we did - we filed with my married name and Montreal has always referred to me as Mrs. S., regardless that my passport is and will remain under my maiden name. They did not have a problem with it.

Good luck, L.

My wife has her maiden name on the marriage certificate. Will we have to change the name on the marriage certificate to the married name before we go to give to I-130 petition?

No. Mrs. Smith did not marry Mr. Smith. Miss Jones married Mr. Smith. Maiden names (or most current name if married before and using other than maiden name) are always on marriage certificates. Name changes occur after or simultaneously with marriage but are dealt with on different paperwork. Your wife didn't change her name legally but you can do as Dan suggested.
