Looking for others who are experiencing issues filing and or obtaining a us passport

Hello all,

I am writing as a very concerned us citizen by birth. My husband was naturalized this year after a very long 8 year process. It very clearly states that a certified copy of the naturalization certificate is acceptable on the department of states website but we had an experience today at the passport acceptance agency (usps) where the woman almost forcibly took our original even though we had a certified true copy. After what it took to get the certified true copy, I am very, very upset. I have had many people contend that the original is needed but it is more than unnecessary it borders discrimination when I can send in just a certified copy of my birth certificate and you have to send your original copy of your document. I know that worse has happened to others out there and I am reaching out to find you. I am interested in going to my local representatives and other government officials to get this process streamlined for new citizens and so that they would be as fairly treated as their us born counterparts. It is never a fight for me to send a certified copy of my birth certificate to get a passport, yet my husband is still waiting for his so we can straighten this out and not have to pay a fee or worse if the original is lost in the mail. If this cannot be resolved by our local representatives or another government official...I may be inclined to sue the government for a us passport in hopes of forcing a change in the law and if you faced similar frustrations in your passport process or your naturalization certificate was lost in the mail...I'd like to hear from you. This gouging of new citizens has to stop.

Uscis the office that gave him the original. Its a certified true copy.

It's possible DOS might still request original before issuing the passport:

The website says "In some cases, you may..." So not definitive for all types of citizenship evidence.

This is unacceptable to me knowing how many originals are lost...if both the passport and the original are lost then what? I am about to have surgery. My husband is my sole supporter at the moment. If something happens to his nonprofit and we don't have documentation of his citizenship it could cause problems finding a job and replacing the lost income. Totally unacceptable.

Let me just state firstly how confusing they make the process....https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/need-passport/apply-in-person.html

I appreciate your interest in this topic but the other link clearly states the opposite. My link under evidence of citizenship states original or certified physical copy.

Also let me state the obvious....no one will pay for the lost income when my husband cant replace his job in the event of that happening and while the replacement of the funds may be an avenue it is not infact at all a solution for the new citizen. Even if they do get around to reimbursement which I highly doubt they would....what is the turn around time for someone in my situation? What if that replacement is cost prohibitive for us in the time being?

This is wrong. I will find the right people and do something about it. I will state a fact again...I didn't have to give my original birth certificate the first time I applied and there would have been no great inconvenience to me to get one. I would have still been able to apply for a job and supply the right documentation to work. Work would not have been withheld....It is wrong and I believe unconstitutional even.

It happens...called usics and was told by multiple attendants the originals are lost in the mail. Called the post office which is the only acceptance facility in our area and they also suggested they know of cases passports have been lost. So just roll the dice? Not going to happen. Why? This is more about principal. There are people who have faced unnecessary issues due to this practice and even a handful is unacceptable.

You DO NOT have to go through the post office. You can clearly just send in your certified certificate. application and passport pics and fee's. Why are you using an agency you don't have to. Many use USPS cuz they think it's easier.

Unconstitutional? Probably millions of people have sent original and they survived. I survived too. The chance of it being lost is slim to none.

If it's lost they will replace it for you free of charge. Your newly naturalized husband doesn't have to go to work every day with his naturalization certificate, so there is no point bringing it up that he may loose income.

Look...I don't see why you are fighting something that could make the process better. He does have to have his certificate to work a new job...if he doesn't it could be denied. I never said he had to carry it all day everyday. Guess this is the wrong place to find like minded people. I will go to the lawyers who fight these cases...
