yes it's true that saying you want a divorce three consecutive times is grounds for divorce but it wasn't meant that saying it in your sleep counts...I don't know I question myself and my religion a lot...like I feel that things were written so long ago and were only applicable then...i.e. jihad...that was only meant for when someone attacks you first not to go around and kill people at random...this isn't what Islam is about...for example...in Iran they have whorehouses and there are Mullah's (holy leaders) at the door who perform nikkahs (marriage certificates) so that the men could have sex with the woman of their choice and when they leave they just divorce them...ummm who the hell are we trying to fool...not God that's for darn tootin...people bend and twist Islam to their liking...and maybe I am guilty of that too...

Also, interpretation that "Saying it in sleep still validates it" would open some sluice-gates.

An example would be if the husband has undergone surgery, and is on a painkiller-drip (typically, toridal) at the hospital. Hospital-use painkillers are oft potent narcotics which can certainly impair coherency/lucidity. With chopf#cks like Aftab Ansari (mentioned in the article), this husband could suddenly wind up with no caregiver after release from hospital--as his utterance of 'talaq' would be made to stand.

Aftab Ansari and Sohela were married 11 years ago and although poor they were understanding enough till one night on December 20, 2005 when Aftab after returning from work at a brick kiln had a tiff with Sohela and went to sleep.

He uttered the word talaq three times during his sleep which his wife heard. She later discussed the matter innocently with her close friends and soon it reached the ears of the conservative Muslim leaders.

The leaders quoting Shariat (Islamic law) ruled that the talaq has to be implemented and if it is not acceptable, the only alternative is temporary separation for 100 days during which the wife will live at her father’s house and spend one night with another male. She can remarry her husband only after the man has given her talaq.
