An Indian Muslim man has reportedly been ordered to separate from his wife after saying 'I divorce thee' in his sleep.

Aftab Ansari was told to leave Sohela, his wife of 11 years, after he said ‘talaq’ - the Arabic equivalent of 'I divorce thee' - three times while asleep.

Religious scholars in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, told the couple to obey orders or face social boycott, reports Asian News International.

The couple were told the only alternative under Muslim law was a temporary separation of 100 days during which the wife would stay at her father’s house and spend a night with another man who she must marry.

Sohela could then remarry Aftab after obtaining a divorce from her second husband.

But the mother of three has threatened to commit suicide if forced to marry someone else: “I love him and I don’t want to leave him in any case," she said.

But Aftab said: “I think what my society is doing is also not wrong. I think they are doing what they think is right.”

How is that temporary if she has to marry the other man?????

So would these "religious scholars" (read "chopf#cks with some certificates") say that divorce is also valid if the husband was under the influence of drugs (say, he was on painkiller treatment at a hospital--high-potency narcotics certainly inhibit coherency/lucidity) or alcohol?

The only divorce that is valid is of these chopf#ck "scholars" from their positions!

Triple ‘talaq’ in sleep lands couple in soup

Sunday, 26 March , 2006, 14:41

Siliguri: A happy couple with three children at Jalpaiguri has been asked to separate by leaders of the local Muslim community — all because the husband had uttered talaq three times in his sleep.

While the couple refused to obey the order since there was no discord between them as they claimed, the Muslim community is adamant that the spouses must separate or face a social boycott.

Aftab Ansari and Sohela were married 11 years ago and although poor they were understanding enough till one night on December 20, 2005 when Aftab after returning from work at a brick kiln had a tiff with Sohela and went to sleep.

He uttered the word talaq three times during his sleep which his wife heard. She later discussed the matter innocently with her close friends and soon it reached the ears of the conservative Muslim leaders.

The leaders quoting Shariat (Islamic law) ruled that the talaq has to be implemented and if it is not acceptable, the only alternative is temporary separation for 100 days during which the wife will live at her father’s house and spend one night with another male. She can remarry her husband only after the man has given her talaq.

As the couple was unwilling to accept the verdict, the matter went to the family counselling centre at Falakata police station in Jalpaiguri district. The counselling centre, attended by judges of the Alipurduar sub-divisional court, discussed the problem in detail on Saturday, but failed to find an acceptable solution.

The additional district session judge (second track), Muhammad Abdul Jalil, then directed the general secretary of the Anjuman Commitee, Muhammad Abul, to settle the issue, sources in the counselling centre said.

i don't understand how what he said in his sleep could actually be held as plausible... the man was SLEEPING...

wonder if the wife misunderstood what he was saying... who knows...

sounds kinda wishy-washy to me... holding a man's word as set in stone when he was sleeping... DOH!

Tho' lovers be lost, love shall not... and death shall have NO dominion!

This is true........I can't believe I'm so stupid. You can't expect to become rich just by saying it without someone else hearing it......that would be crazy!
