Of course politics affects our lives as they pass the laws,  decide where the tax dollars are spent,  and enforce them

this is one decision i have not followed closely but i do know conservatives (even not associated with a church) marched in protest 

 

and i am so happy i don't have to make these decisions 

Survey after survey finds a majority of Americans support gay marriage, and increasing over time. The Supreme Court however needs legal arguments. I do think one point the court made, that congress needs to do more actual lawmaking and stop trying to use SCOTUS to make laws, is quite valid. Maybe congress will do more actual law making in the next term and give less work to scotus.

If Dems lose and the status quo remains as is, there will be squabbles. Federal judge issues an injuction, appeal, then ultimately gets to the Supreme Court. And as we have now learned and seen, the Supreme Court is skewed to the far right. You know how that plays out...

Sorry, in this context I will always take the quote and written word of an actual Supreme Court justice, measured and deliberated before being published, over any opinion piece regardless of where it is published. If a justice who dissented with the original ruling is still talking about overturning it, that is nothing like words impetuously spoken. And if you think otherwise presumably you think the wrong types people are on the court, as judges should be measured and precise.

Among others, and other articles in other sources. Hopefully it's not a real concern and it's just an attempt to scare LGBT people into voting, but it's not a crazy fear to have and it is difficult for me to watch when straight people on this site and elsewhere completely disregard the concerns LGBT people have about our rights.

I agree with you 100%. Most straight people disregard the feelings of the LGBTQ community and it’s disheartening and quite frankly awful. It is a huge concern (no matter where you get your news from)... something I have been thinking about a lot lately and trying to educate and advocate for those who need it. I pray everyday that this will not be an issue but it is still something that needs to be discussed. Your feelings are warranted. Just know that I, among many others, are here to fight for the rights of the LGBTQ community. You are never alone!!!

What goes to the Supreme Court, who takes it to the Supreme Court.

the only thing you need to care about is the embassy of your interview

the culture and norms of that country

The CO who does your interview must be convinced the relationship is real and see documentation to support your marriage with as much time together as you can have

the US accepts gay marriage and is supported here by each office you have to deal with like Social Security,  insurances,  etc

we have several gay couples on VJ that have successfully completed their visa requests

People have moved on from same gender marriage. Even if SCOTUS reversed its ruling (and this would take years, and note that abortion -- at least 3rd trimester abortion -- is a much higher priority for conservatives to reverse, and it's been nearly 50 years and no substantial action)  that there is no constitutional right to same gender marriage, given it is the law in multiple states, including part of the Constitutions of some states, the https://constitutioncenter.org/interactive-constitution/full-text says:

The courts have interpreted this to mean that a marriage in one state has to be recognized in another. 

Hence well before same gender marriage became a major issue in the 1990s, some states allowed first cousins to marry and some didn't. You could get married in the state that allowed first cousins to marry and then move to a state that didn't allow first cousins to marry, and your marriage had to be recognized. 

 

So all it takes is one state to recognize same gender marriage, and all other states, plus DC have to recognize same gender marriage (I don't know about territories, especially American Samoa which is a defacto separate country). And there will always be at least one such state; you can't unring a bell.

 

Never say never though. Still if your time frame is 5 years or less, I'm certain your same gender marriage will be accepted by USCIS and the Department of State, and if not, there will be a federal injunction within days to re-instate.

in 2020 no one cares if you are gay, straight, whatever gender one wants to assign themselves.  I think its ridiculous to a point where people have started questioning what happens when X Y Z happens.
