Hello K1'ers,

What do people do get their fiance(e)'s belongings to the US? My fiancee lives in Russia so I want to avoid shipping all her clothes since it's not cheap. For the members from Russia, what did you do? I read there's a limit of 20KG (44 lbs) per economy passenger so that doesn't sound much. I won't be able to fly with her to her POE so unfortunately, she'll be alone. =( We're both disappointed of course...

Any help is appreciated.

I think 20 kg is more than enough, but I lead quite a spartan life :) I didn't bring much with me to the U.S. - just my CD's and books, and some clothes. It's much easier to leave whatever you can behind and just buy new stuff here. When I came here I had 2 suitcases with me, very well within the weight limits.

If she doesn't want to ship her stuff, and wants to take it with her, she will have to pay for whatever exceeds the weight limit. I don't know any other way to do it :(

You can use a freight company to ship stuff by boat in 6 weeks or so. But my suggestion would be take what is not replaceable, fill up the rest of the luggage with clothes and what not until the 20KG limit, and then buy whatever else you need in the US.

I'm only at the very start of my journey with at least 6 months ahead (RFE's and other flaming hoop depending!) and I'm already starting to sell off various items. No point taking most my DVD's due to region difference, eletrical appliances getting sold off to friends and family. Much nearer time I'll be transfering all essential files to my laptop to carry over and selling my PC. When Nick goes back in December he's gonna take some of my stuff with him then. Last few weeks before I go I'll be selling my car and having to drive my mothers really lousy 'golfcart' of a car. Taking as many clothes as I can stuff in a suitcase and my toothbrush....everything else stays for my parents to dispose of. Only things I'll be getting shipped are mine and Nicks guitars. Last time we trusted an airline with a guitar as a checked item it got stolen by aer lingus who have refused to compensate and basically just told us 'tough luck'!!

I'm at roughly the same stage as you. Still getting final documents together for the petition but should have that posted to my fiance in the next week.

I'm selling everything, like you. Most of my stuff is 'stuff', completely unessential. I'm getting an ipod to transfer my music collection to and taking a few things I can't bear to part with in a second suitcase when I visit him in August, but otherwise I'm quite happy to be starting my life over with the person I love. I don't need much else.

I dumped my entire closet on the floor, and made piles according to how often I wear the clothes, how badly I need it, is it appropriate for the weather, how old is it, etc. Then I started from the ones I knew I'd definitly want to keep, and made tests loading two suitcases to fit into the requirements for my flight. I prolly packed and unpacked 5-6 times, in the 2 months previous to my flight. I donated the clothes I decided not to bring.

I did the same thing with personals, and also left a small box with items I didn't want to part with, but knew I wouldn't need right away. Things that I can bring when I go visit my parents.

For flying to USA and Canada most of the airlines use the "2 pieces of luggage" concept, meaning that you can carry 2 pieces of luggage weighing each not more than 20-23 kilos (depending on the airline) and with no more than 158 cm height, length and width. So the total would be around 40 kilos/per person... I do not know if that applies from flying to Rusia to USA, but you have to check with the airlines that she is flying with, most of them have the rules on their site.

Same here, except I'll just throw away my computer (it's from 2003 anyway), plus I used Yahoo to send over all the GB's of pirated music ;)

This caught my eye. I'm currently in the process of looking at a flightcase for a guitar since I want to take it along as check-in luggage. What airline did you fly with? Did you have your guitars insured? How did it all turn out, did you get any type of compensation from anyone (airline or insurance company)?

 I wanna take my "collection" spinning Fenwick rod... if anything like that happens to it I think I go crazy! I also know that some companies allow you to take some "sport" equipment with you which will not be counted against your permitted luggage weight, but as an extra piece of your luggage.

Yep. I have just received confirmation from the airline we are flying with:

"On flights to the USA and Canada you are entitled to take with you two items of luggage weighing each 23 kg (height, length and width not exceeding 158 cm). In addition one piece of hand luggage not exceeding 8 kg in weight (max. 55x40x20 cm in size).

Special conditions:

If tow pieces of luggage are taken, of which each exceeds the permissible weight of 23 kg up to a maxium limit of 32 kg, then a flat fee of 25 Euro ex Germany will be charged (25 USD ex target area). Excess luggage charges apply beyond this. "

If you have some things that you deem valuable and you can not carry them on the plane, your best option probably would be to ship them via DHL. It will be more expensive obviously, but there is less chance of the item being broken, stolen, or whatever the case may be.

I have a friend who ordered a rod from USA through DHL... got here in Bucharest in two pieces... they were wondering if it's not good like that :girlwerewolf2xn:

I'll see if I can take it with me as hand luggage, but I'll also have my laptop ... oh, well. More worries added to the sleepless nights which already started as the date of my departure is nearer... tks for the idea though...

I'm still sorting out the details (and we're just about to file our initial I-129F package, so it's not like I don't have time...), but I plan to take quite a bit with me, by shipping it ahead

quotes I've had so far, for 100 cubic feet (which was an estimate based on some special items of furniture and a number of boxes) range from £500 to £800, and that's a door to door service - they come and pack for you, take everything away, it's anything from six weeks to three months in transit (no problems; I'm in no hurry!) and then they deliver to a US address... obviously it adds to the cost, but it's what we want to do at this stage :)

only thing to watch for, if you do it - apparently you have to be in the US to receive the goods, because if you ship to someone else you have to pay massive customs duties; so time it right ;)

The Very Secret Diary of Legolas Son of Weenus - by Cassandra Claire

Day One: Went to Council of Elrond. Was prettiest person there. Agreed to follow some tiny little man to Mordor to throw ring into volcano. Very important mission - gold ring so tacky.

Day Six: Far too dark in Mines of Moria to brush hair properly. Am very afraid I am developing a tangle.

Orcs so silly.

Still the prettiest.

Day 35: Boromir dead. Very messy death, most unnecessary. Did get kissed by Aragorn as he expired. Does a guy have to get shot full of arrows around here to get any action? Boromir definitely not prettier than me. Cannot understand it. Am feeling a pout coming on.

Frodo off to Mordor with Sam. Tiny little men caring about each other, rather cute really.

Am quite sure Gimli fancies me. So unfair. He is waist height, so can see advantages there, but chunky braids and big helmet most off-putting. Foresee dark times ahead, very dark times.

Quick Update - Polina decided to ship via pony express a box of her clothes since she didn't want to carry it around Moscow during her interview. Carrying extra luggage around Moscow is not advised... I guess bringing clothes here will be cheaper then buying new clothes. Then again, she's a woman and they all NEED new clothes... =) We're both excited about her interview!
