Bank to bank transfer.  I wouldnt carry physical cash across the border.

For that matter we spent close to 8 years in another country without a bank account there at all.  Used credit cards and paid ‘em online, withdrew cash from ATM’s, there are 100 ways to access money until you get an actual account to transfer it into.  I ran up thousands of credit card points LOL.
Once you do have an account?  There are a lot if ways to make the transfer inexpensively.

IF:  you leave the account open, and it has more than $10,000, do NOT forget to declare it on next year’s joint tax return.
