Do you feel a thread is 'owned' by the OP? Are there instances where you feel it's fair/unfair for a thread to be locked 'at the request of the OP'?

If so, why?

I feel for the most part, a thread should not be closed 'at the request of the OP' UNLESS it is a conversation about the OP's personal life & the conversation went out of control. Otherwise, if it's just a topic of discussion & it veers off course, then the OP can start a new one and let the other run its course.

I think in some instances the OP should be able to have the thread closed.

In 95% of cases this is why an OP requests that it be closed. I thought I would mention this since I am usually the only one that gets these requests. Most OP's could care less about the topic getting crazy unless it was over a personal issue.

I think it should be against TOS for people to get "too personal" and then complain about the responses. VJ is not the appropriate place to talk about the strange growth on your genitalia or special sexual skills or the fact that you're cheating on your spouse or whatever - and if you make the choice to bring that out on VJ, you should be banned for whining about the responses.

I've seen it a lot lately. Even in this forum with the silly 'thanks for your understanding' thread & it made me scratch my head as to why that OP would request & get a lock for it.

So, are you saying that discussing the OP's personal life in a controlled fashion is NOT grounds for the OP to ask for thread closure?

Can we have one thread for all this please?

I was just following Lal's suggestion to restart the original thread....I didn't want to lump it in a thread about complaining about the procedures here.

Delete if ya want, E.

I deleted my comment as I realized that :). SOrry!

If the thread get's way off the original subject, or personal attacks happen, then yes i think the OP has every right to ask that it be closed. JMO

I don't have an example. My question is based on your statement. You give the example please.

Erm, ok.

Controlled vs. out of hand....hrmm...poster brings up personal life...in the out of hand issue, ppl discuss it, poo gets flung, the thread turns into a nightmare...poster regrets ever starting it.

controlled...poster brings up personal life, people discuss it in a rational manner, topic gets stale after a few days as most do...topic dies...no real impetus to make OP feel regret for starting it.

So that's why I asked for an example. I can't see how if it was in a controlled fashion, what would make the OP change his/her mind and request a lock.

If the topic has died, it is falling down the forum anyway and the OP would have no need to ask for it to be closed and probably wouldn't bother. We are not talking about a thread that has died tho. An OP would ask for a thread to be closed to prevent the discussion going further, if it has died they wouldn't feel the need. Seems an invalid example. Sorry.

You've essentially just repeated what I've said...which is why I differentiated between 'controlled' and 'out of hand' ;) I cannot think of an example where a controlled conversation would need a thread lock. Since that's what you're asking me to comment on, and since I can't come up with it...can you please provide an example?
