Cleopatra is once again getting the big screen treatment, this time courtesy of Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins and the DC heroine herself, Gal Gadot. But even with a female director, and female screenwriter in Laeta Kalogridis on board, the casting of an Israeli actor with Ashkenazi Jewish heritage as the legendary Queen of Egypt has led to a not unfounded debate about Hollywood whitewashing.

In recent years historians, such as Hilke Thuer of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, have questioned the long-held belief that Cleopatra VII was white. Scholars agree that there’s no doubt that Cleo was Macedonian-Greek on her father Ptolemy XII’s side, potentially Persian or Syrian too, but because the ethnic origin of her mother remains unverified it has strengthened the idea that the Egyptian ruler was of mixed heritage. “The mother of Cleopatra has been suggested to have been from the family of the priests of Memphis,” Betsy M Bryan, Alexander Badawy professor of Egyptian art and archaeology at Johns Hopkins University, told Newsweek. “If this were the case, then Cleopatra could have been at least 50% Egyptian in origin.”

 

I thought this was interesting as the SJW's had a major melt down about her casting and now are having another go after it was pointed out she was not Egyptian.

 

 

So now they are saying that she may have been 50% Egyptian, so that means she has to be played by someone who is North African? Who may of course be 0% Egyptian. What about her Greek ancestry? Well I am being lazy and slightly ignoring the MAcedonian component, at that time Greeks did not consider Macedonians Greeks.

This is dumb, as you all know. Cleopatra was pretty certainly Macedonian-Greek with a smidge of Persian. The support for her having any Egyptian or African blood is generally rejected. More dumb stuff for bored people to get bent out of shape about on both sides of this discussion. It's a big old yawn. I happen to think Gal Gadot isn't a great actress, and the role could have been given to someone who could do it better justice.

While it is related to "who's more woke than I am" stuff, this can be found everywhere. Everything is potentially offensive to someone. Now that we have Twitter, we have to hear more about how someone thinks dogs getting pretend married is an affront to God, or how cilantro is proof the devil is real.

Never could figure out wth Twitter was for except to look stupid and yell at airlines when your flight is delayed. Actually, I have had some success using it to interact with companies to make direct complaints. Beyond that, it just seems like a way to confirm that you're as much of a dumbass as people suspect you already are.
