I can't believe it's illegal to ask for verification once the green card expires. Employers should 100% be allowed to ask, and fail to present one should be enough reason to fire.

Your status as a legal permanent resident does not expire with the physical green card expiration.  Once an Employer have you verified through the e-verify system, then there is no reason for reverification. This is just to avoid unnecessary discrimination since most delay for permanent green cards aren't the fault of the filer. USCIS and the govt understand there is delay and bottleneck and such should not affect the applicant in terms of their job status.

But where would it end? That would leave employees open to discrimination from employers requesting documents all the time. Hell no! If you are legal, you have nothing to hide so why should you keep verifying who you are over and over again.

My SS card has the DHS restriction on it, even though I asked a new card when I did my green card application, but they never mailed a new one. I called them and they told me that the restriction is lifted on their system so I would be okay. Since I'm not an US citizen, I can't apply for a replacement card online and all the offices are closed. I called them and I was given the option to mail the old card, and a valid passport (no photocopies allowed), and a valid green card, which I don't have since I'm waiting to remove my conditions since June last year.

Now I'm applying for a new job, and my green card is expired and my ROC extension letter is about to expire as well. What should I do?

Nothing right now. If you get a job before it expires, you will use that and they can't say no because it's expiring. If you get the job after the letter expires, then you will make an infopass appointment to get the stamp and use that.
