Hi I'm an 18 year old admitted in the US when I was 17 as a legal permanent resident (IR2 visa) allowing me to acquire my citizenship through my dad's naturalization. We were supposed to apply for my passport but my dad lost his naturalization certificate so we're in the process of applying for a new one to apply again. I'm currently waiting for my green card and I was just wondering if its possible to go outside of the US when they're processing my US passport and they can just mail it to me in the Philippines for me to gain entry to the US again or what are my other options to be able to study in the PH?

By law you have to leave the US using your US passport if you're a US citizen. If you already acquired citizenship through your dad's naturalization process, you green card is worthless and probably invalid at this point.

Now that you're 18, you might have to apply N600, after he gets his NC back, then apply for a passport.

If I were you, I would wait until you naturalize.

I would still naturalize? I thought I already got a derivative citizenship from my dad?

If you were under 18 when your dad took his citizenship oath then you are a citizen now. That means you cannot apply for a green card. Green cards are for permanent residents, not for citizens. Applying for the N600 would get you your own certificate, since your dad doesn't have his in hand at this time to serve as your proof of citizenship. My guess is that if he has already applied for a replacement it would be quicker to wait for his certificate, rather than start a new application (and expense) for your own.

I was admitted here as a permanent resident when I was 17 (just last month), so do I still need to file for my n600 when we get my dad's certificate or we can go straight to the passport application already? I'm 18 already btw...

She already automatically naturalized under INA320.

No, N600 is totally optional. She can just apply for the passport.

She needs his certificate to apply for her N600 anyway. She doesn’t have proof of citizenship without it. His replacement plus her applying for passport seems obvious way to go. She can apply for n600 later if she wants a certificate of citizenship of her own, but it’s not necessary.

Hi thank goodness! I was getting really anxious since I'm 18 already and thought I wouldn't be able to get my passport. Quick question though, my dad got married after he took the naturalization oath so his status was single in the NC. Now that we're applying for a new one, do we put single or married on it and will it affect the processing time?

He needs to answer the questions as asked, I don’t know what the form looks like. If it asks for current marital status then he says married, if it asks for status as at time of naturalization he says single. Unfortunately it seems these forms take 6-8 months to process usually so it is not going to be quick.

Also, tbh I don’t really see how you can leave now. As it will be your first US passport you will need to apply in person for it, and you’ll need your dad’s NC and your green card/copy of immigrant visa in passport (as well as a couple other things) to hand in with the application.  I know some people say it’s ok to leave without a passport in hand because  they can’t refuse a USC entry, however, you will have no proof of being a USC if you leave now without one.
