WASHINGTON / CNN — The White House has declined offers from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help investigate the recent COVID-19 outbreak that has been taking the West Wing by storm, according to a federal health official.

The offer by the CDC to help with contact tracing occurred almost immediately after the President made public that he has tested positive for coronavirus. Despite the concerns expressed by the CDC, White House officials turned down the offer to help, the official said.

The offer was repeated in a phone call Monday, according to the source.

The White House has shown little indication that it is tracing contacts from those exposed at events like the Supreme Court nomination ceremony where almost no masks were worn and there was no social distancing both at the outdoor event and indoor reception.

Who cares, really?  Doesn't much matter HOW you caught it, just that you survive it.  Which I believe everyone so far from this "superspreader event" has done, right?

Infections are picking up again. If and when spread reaches a critical mass, we do risk shutdowns again. We should be doing everything we can to prevent that. Contact tracing can help slow down the spread by letting people know they have been exposed and hopefully isolating until they are sure they don't have it. Leading by example would make it easier for others to do that too.

Unfortunately masks, contact tracing, hand sanitizer and distancing may be the only things that stand between where we are and staying at home again. People should be taking these things seriously.

And yet we hear almost daily that masks don't really do much, and that we shouldn't be using hand sanitizer so much.  Distance, I agree with, have been doing that for years now.  Contact tracing only works if one volunteers their info, or your phone has installed in it the ability (without your approval) to trace you.  Oh wait...

Still, I'll take the odds of > 99% survival rate any day.  60 million H1N1 cases in the US, and we did just fine.

Contact tracing is also something like if someone gets sick that I worked with yesterday, they let me know so even if I feel great, I don't go to a large public event and risk exposing 500 other people. Wearing a mask can mean that if I am sick and don't realize it, I spread less virus to less people. Hand sanitizer, we already know that from infection control studies that it works if used correctly.
