Okay, for those who entered the US on CR-1 or IR-1 visas, and who checked the box on the DS-230 indicating they wanted an SSN generated...

a) Did it work?

B) How long after entering the States did it arrive?

I know a lot of people say "it doesn't always work, but sometimes it does", but I'm looking for specific examples, just so I can kind of figure out a timeline to give myself. I entered a week ago. Should I wait two more weeks and THEN go re-apply at the local SS office?? Should I wait til the end of this week and then re-apply? Should I not re-apply at all?

This sucks, because I have a temp agency that says it has work for me, but they have a rule that they need the SSN (company rule -- they know I'm authorized to work as I'm a GC holder, but have some rule that they need an SSN before they'll send me out for work).

Wel lif ya need a quick reply, then the search button would be a good way to go!! lol This is another one of MDyoung question he must answer quite often! lol

I checked the box, but after 1.5 months it had not arrived, so I downloaded the form from the Govt site, went into the local office and applied for one. 1 week it arrived in the mail!! I believe they say if after 12 or BUSINESS days it has not arrived to go into the local SSN office and enquire about it. I'm surew Mdyoung wil answer that, or you wil find it with the search feature. best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Hubby ticked the DS230 box for the social#. Never came though so he went down to the office and applied. They said there was no such thing as applying by DS230  Well we told them otherwise nice and loud and got that cleared up. Hubby applied while in the office and it came about 2 weeks after in the mail.

ticking the box on DS-230 didn't work for me either and there was 3 of us

our SSA was not so cooperative in searching to see where we were in the SAVE system until after our PR cards arrived, then it was a simple application and all the SSN cards came within 7 days.

PR cards arrived at around 4 weeks

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. If you have been here over three weeks and no SSN card you need to head into an SSA office with your birth certificate, passport with I-551 langauge or I-551 card. You might need to submit an SSN application or you might not.

You want specific examples.

As of September 30, 2004, SSA had issued EAE participants over 101,000 SSN cards.

MES could not process 27,383 (26 percent) of the 103,383 EAE records SSA received in FY 2004 because of data incompatibility issues among the Agency, State and DHS. As such, immigrants had to visit an FO to obtain an SSN...

All y'all above are so lucky ... it took Gareth's eight weeks to get here the first time and seven to get the corrected one without the restrictive legend (because the chopf#cks had entered his DOB wrong the first time, so then he showed up with a green card, BC, passport, etc. with the "wrong" birthdate).

He didn't do it by the DS-230, so I guess my comment isn't really helpful. But geez, we're jealous (and he better not lose the new card!).
